Hurstville Road

Friday was a difficult day.  There are always parts of any job that are difficult and unpleasant and that was what Friday was for me.  Anyway I finally got out of the office about 6:00 p.m.  and I met a friend who had asked me to take some images for her, which I was glad to do.  Got that taken care of and headed out-of-town on the Hurstville Road.   About a half mile down the road I saw a bunch of cars all stopped with flashers on and I almost did a U-turn because I thought the road was blocked by an accident.

Then I thought, well I’m a photographer, why not go take a picture of it.  What I found was not what I originally thought it was.  The car in front of this enormous turtle was a vehicle from one of the big dealerships in town.  They always use the Hurstville Road for their test drives.  They were apparently on the way back to town when the driver (a young lady) stopped to avoid hitting this turtle and put on her flashers to warn other motorists.

Big Ole Turtle

When I got close enough to see what was going on I saw an opportunity to photograph a rare form of wildlife and perhaps help protect it.  So I pulled off the road, grabbed the D4 and headed back to where they were stopped.  The Mother of the young test driver was trying to call law enforcement and the sales rep was looking at his watch knowing he’d been gone too long.  The young lady was really nervous for the turtle.  My first inclination was to grab the turtle on either side of its shell and lift it off the highway.  Then I saw the very sharp claws it had on all for legs and realized those would be digging into my hands.

So I called my friend Ann Burns.  She is a Naturalist for the DNR at the Interpretive Center and she would know what to do.  I was able to reach her and she said that as heartbreaking as it may be the turtle was on a mission.  If it was a female turtle, she may be on her way to lay eggs and nothing short of putting her in a cage was going to detour her from that mission.   Same thing if it was a male, he would have a reason to be where he was and nothing would stop him from that quest.  Her best advice was to try to figure which way it was going and help it across the road if possible but to remember they are very dangerous.

May-31-2013-2BB

About that time Mike showed up.  He had seen the turtle on his way home but he had his dogs in his pickup and he had to drop them off before coming back to help.  Mike is a big strong guy who is use to working with heavy objects.  He thought about picking it up by the tail as he had heard one time that was the safest way but then he also decided that might be a struggle he didn’t want.  So I would get the turtle’s attention and then Mike would take his foot and scoot him as far as he could.  After about 10 minutes of this he finally got him off the roadway and on the embankment.

By this time a Deputy Sheriff arrived.  I told him what Ann had said and he acknowledge that was probably correct.  He estimated the weight to be about 60 pounds and thought he might be upwards of 50 years old.  I decided it was time for me to leave and so I put my camera away and headed for Miller time.  🙂

Interestingly enough Saturday I was watching the National Geographic channel and they showed an outdoors man picking up a huge turtle (about the same size as this one) with the tail in one hand and he put his other hand on the bottom of the shell rendering the turtle defenseless.  🙂  If only we would have known!

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your Sunday and be careful.

Dynamic Clouds

Challenging day yesterday.  I was glad when the day was over.  The image above is of a large system developing South of Maquoketa around 4:45 p.m. yesterday.  It was windy and humid most of the day and we would periodically check the radar for the progress of a large storm system that was approaching.

The ground is so saturated and many of our streams, creeks, and rivers are near or at flood stage and with much more rain in the forecast it is sure to cause major problems.  I love to shoot dynamic clouds anyway and these were just magnificent.   Obviously they would have been more impressive if I would have had a great landscape scene in the foreground, but alas I did not so the clouds themselves will have to do.

Horses working together

This image is quite the story.  I have wanted to capture an image of these two horses for over a year now.  The road that goes past where they are is not wide enough to park and often times I see them on my way to work and you know that I am always running late.    Well this evening I saw them again and I decided I would risk parking in someone’s driveway long enough to grab an image or two.

The guys have a wonderfully symbiotic relationship.  Every time I see them they are in this position.  They use each others tails to keep the flies away from the others eyes.  As you can see from closer inspection of this image the flies are still bothersome but it does help.  When I captured this image they were more interested in me than in helping each other out.

I’ve seen hundreds of horses in fields but never two working together like this and these guys are always this way  🙂

That’s it for today.  Enjoy your Friday and the weekend.  Stay safe and cool.  Thanks for stopping by.  Be careful.

A favorite dinner

Short post this morning as I have an early morning commitment.  Jeanne and I had dinner with her family choir group last night at one of my favorite restaurants, Tony Roma’s.  I only had my little point and shoot camera with me and I almost would have been better without anything.  When flash is required it just does a terrible job.  So please excuse the lack of image quality in this post.

Really the main reason I took the camera in to the restaurant was to capture an image of my meal for the 365 project.  BTW only 32 more days and it is complete!!!! YEA!!!!!  🙂

I love Tony Roma’s Anniversary Special; two tenderloin medallions, half a rack of baby back ribs, two shrimps, and “loaded” mashed potatoes.  Problem is I had several bites before I remembered to take the image.  🙂

Oh and NO I didn’t eat the broccoli.  I gave as much as I could to Jeanne.

Anyway it was a great evening with some wonderful people and great conversation.

Hope you have a great day today.  Thanks for stopping by and as always be careful.

Ben, Joshua, Gabby and Angie

Good day and happy Tuesday.  Back at it today, but I sure enjoyed the four-day weekend.  I could get very use to that.   We got our new humming-bird feeder set up in the back yard yesterday morning and actually had some (at least one) visitor already.  Check out my 365 project for the evidence.

Even though the weather was cool, damp and threatening rain we decided to go downtown and see the traditional Memorial Day parade.  It was much smaller this year because of the weather.  I suspect many entries pulled out because of the predicted showers.

Josh and Angie wait for the parade

Going to a parade or actually anything for that matter is so much fun with Joshua.  The discovery through his eyes is refreshing and brings about an excitement to ordinary things.  Sunday I read a book to him about fire trucks and policemen and he was very excited to see the fire trucks and the police cars.

Josh and Angie wave to the band

Of course one of the things that all kids love about parades anymore is the free candy they receive.  I don’t remember getting candy at parades when I was a kid but now it is S.O.P.  It started raining about half way through the parade and many people packed up and left.  We stayed to the end as we didn’t want to disappoint Josh.

Gabby was safely ensconced in her car seat and protected from the environment.  She slept through the entire parade.  🙂  Her day will come when she, like Joshua will be standing by the curb anxiously waiting for the arrival of the parade.

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you enjoy your Tuesday and please be careful.

Memorial Day ~ Monday May 27, 2013

Joan and Andreas

Happy Monday / Memorial Day.  I have enjoyed a very nice 4 day weekend.  I had Friday off and intended to spend the day shooting images.  The best laid plans however often do go astray so I spent the bulk of the day doing yard work.  It was well worth the effort to have that job behind me and not have to worry about it the rest of the holiday.

Friday evening we met Joan and Andreas at CRUST for a wonderful dinner.  Lots of conversation about photography, lenses, and wildlife photography.  We all enjoyed the lobster ravioli for dinner and it was a very enjoyable evening.

Bull Buffalo

Saturday the weather was pretty much yuk most of the day.  Later in the afternoon Jeanne and I went for a photo drive.  We saw some interesting things but there just wasn’t any good place to park.  Then we came across this big guy.  He was magnificent.  This image just does not do him justice.  To get a better image of him I would have had to go down an incline into the ditch and then try to climb a hill that would have been 8 feet high and then I would have been standing (assuming I would have made it to the top and could still stand) right next to the fence and very close to Mr. Bull Buffalo.  If you look at this fence, it doesn’t look like it could withstand his weight were he determined to get on the other side.

Since at the top of the hill I would have been very close to him I wasn’t about to take a chance of him showing me his displeasure and getting to know me up close and personal.  🙂  Also with a bum knee, I wasn’t sure I could actually climb the hill in the first place.

Saturday Night Dinner

On the way back to town we passed several men riding their bikes wearing tutus.  Now the temperature was 48 degrees, it was windy, damp and not a great time to be riding anyway, but in a tutu!?  We stopped at Junction 21 Bar and Grill for dinner.  I’ve been told the food was really good there.

We quickly learned the riders were part of a campaign against skin cancer, and the ride was a fundraising event, which explains the unorthodox biking outfits.  The crowd was loud and happy, the food was okay and the entertainment, well let’s just say that he was entertaining.  He would forget the words to some of his songs and just hum the words or make up his own.  🙂

Joshua and the Rabbit

Sunday we had a nice visit from Angie, Josh, and Gabby.  Ben was on call so Angie brought the kids over for a visit.  We had a lot of fun with both and of course enjoyed Angie’s company.  Angie and Josh had lunch with us.  Gabby ate before we did.  🙂

Gabriella

So a very nice weekend so far.  Weather permitting we hope to go to the Memorial Day Parade later this afternoon.  Dubuque always has a nice parade and it will be fun watching Josh with all the fire trucks, sirens, bands, and other parade vehicles.  He really enjoyed the Halloween Parade last October so it will be fun photographing him at this parade.

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you have had an enjoyable holiday weekend as well.  Enjoy your Memorial Day and be careful.

Chinook Helicopter

Happy Friday.  I am enjoying a day off today.  With Memorial Day on Monday it makes for a 4 day weekend.  Hope to get out and shoot this afternoon as it doesn’t sound like the weather is going to be all that great for the rest of the weekend.

I had training in Cedar Rapids late yesterday afternoon and after my portion of the session was over I headed home.  At 7:30 p.m. it is still very light out and so there is always an opportunity for a photography.

Chinook Helicopter

Nikon D800 | Nikon 80 – 400 mm lens | ISO 100 1/800 sec @ f5.6

I was going by the airport in Monticello on the way home and saw this Chinook helicopter getting ready to take off from the airport.  By the time I got the car slowed down and stopped, got my camera out and set up it was already airborne.   it is an amazing helicopter.  Some interesting facts about the Chinook:

The Chinook is a multi-mission, heavy-lift transport helicopter. Its primary mission is to move troops, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield. Its secondary missions include medical evacuation, disaster relief, search and rescue, aircraft recovery, fire fighting, parachute drops, heavy construction and civil development.

Chinook helicopters were introduced in 1962 as the CH-47 Chinook, and models A, B and C were deployed in Vietnam. As the product of a modernization program, which included refurbishing existing CH-47s, the first CH-47Ds were delivered in 1982 and were produced until 1994. A central element in the Gulf War, they continue to be the standard for the U.S. Army in the global campaign against terrorism. Since its introduction 1,179 Chinooks have been built.

Well that’s it for today.  Hope you enjoy your Friday and this Memorial Holiday weekend.  Remember please to give thanks for all the brave men and women who have and are serving our country.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful.

Angie, Ben, Gabby, and Josh

Last Sunday was a wonderful day.  Joshua and Gabriella Roling were baptized at St. Luke’s’ Methodist Church.  Great Grandma Andreae, all four Grandparents, and three loving Uncles were in attendance.  It was a beautiful ceremony followed by a wonderful brunch at the Country Club.  It was an amazing day.

May-19-2013

A quick story about photography.  Many new point-and-shoot cameras come with a built-in GPS tagging feature that tags where the picture was taken (my little point-and-shoot did not.)  My Nikon D4  (Nikon’s top DSLR) does not either so I had to buy a 3rd party unit for $39 that fits on the hot shoe of the D4.  Oh well.  Anyway I got it yesterday and took a few images at the duck pond on my way home.  When I uploaded the images to Lightroom 4 (my RAW processor software) a map poped up and I can see the exact location I was standing when I took the images.

I moved about 5 feet to take some additional images and it tagged that movement.  So you can see two tags on the map where I took the two sets of images.  Amazing stuff the technology we have today at our fingertips for not much money.

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day today.  I’m off tomorrow and Monday so a nice 4 day weekend.  Be careful.

Maquoketa Golf & Country Club

A real treat yesterday.  I got to play in the Maquoketa Kiwanis’ Charity Golf Event held at the Maquoketa Golf and Country Club.  The golf course is a really fun 9 hole course that is very well maintained.  For a 9 hole course it is one of the best I have played.  This is the type of golf I play anymore.  Since I no longer practice or play on a regular basis, what little golf skills I had have deteriorated to the point of non-existence.   🙂  Best shot golf is non-threatening and much less stressful.

Part of the team

It is a best shot event with lots of games on many of the holes (to help raise money.)  There are five players per teams and two teams per hole.  So there is a lot of standing around, chatting, drinking, checking emails, and then you get to hit the ball and then back to the other stuff.  Still even if you have a bad shot or a bunch of them, once in a while you will sink a putt for the team and always enjoy the comradely.

May-21-2013-B

One of the guys in our group (on the other team) owns the Ford Dealership in Maquoketa.  A very nice and gracious individual.  His dealership sponsored a hole-in-one contest for a new Ford Mustang.  He had cars parked all around the golf course at different tee boxes.  So since there was a lot of standing around and waiting on the tee box, I took the opportunity to practice my auto photography.

May-21-2013-C

There were some beautiful cars at the golf course and I shot several of them.  The weather was perfect.   I love playing in this event and seeing so many people I enjoy.  Lots of fun yesterday but back at it today.  I’m teaching a class this afternoon so I have to get myself and my stuff together.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your hump day Wednesday and be careful.

May-18-2013

I’m later than late so a very quick post this morning.  I told you yesterday we saw five weddings at the River Walk in Dubuque Saturday.  I was able to photograph three of the brides.  The 4th one was at one end of the walk and we were on the other so I couldn’t get that one and the last one was when we were processing images at Star Brewery and my camera was already put away in the bag.

May-18-2013-2A

The first image is my favorite and I used it as the shot of the day.  The image above was one of those that the wedding party was a little upset that I was taking their picture.  Enjoy the moment and lighten up.  It’s only a photograph of your happy day. 🙂

May-18-2013-2B

This was the last wedding party I shot.  They went down the stairs at the gazebo and took off their shoes and put their feet in the water.  I had no interest in photographing that so this was as good as it got in my view.  Note the trendy shoes of the bride.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by.  Hopefully I’ll have more time tomorrow and show you some interesting images.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Barb & Emily

Happy Monday.  It’s been a few days since my last post.  Partly because of my work schedule and partly because I didn’t have anything interesting to show or tell you.  Well that changed this weekend.  It was an event filled weekend and very enjoyable with lots of photography involved.

On Saturday afternoon two friends from Cedar Rapids came to Dubuque to learn some things about their cameras that they didn’t know.  Both recently obtained new Nikon DLSR cameras and have been shooting with them in complete auto mode.  They asked me if I would teach some of the technical aspects about their cameras so that they could get the most out of their cameras.  So about 1:40 p.m. we met at the river walk in Dubuque and started talking about photography in general and the three key elements that control exposure in specific.

The image above is of Barb (L) and Emily (R) just before we got started.  Barb has a Nikon D7000 and Emily has a Nikon D5100.  Both cameras are 16.2 megapixels and are excellent DLSRs.  Both have been shooting in the Auto Mode and shooting only JPEGs.  I talked them into shooting in Aperture Priority Mode and in RAW.  We talked a lot about aperture values, shutter speeds, and ISO sensitivity to control exposure.  The advantage of shooting in APM is it allows you to control your depth of field.

Shoot at the River Walk

We did not talk about composition rules and each of them had their own style of how they like to shoot.  We only focused on aperture, shutter speed and ISO for the afternoon.  One of the more interesting things of the photo session was as we were walking the river walk and just talking and shooting images.  We encountered five different wedding parties.  Two were going on in the River Center, one at the Grand Harbor and the other two came to the river walk just for a photo shoot.  I shot some images of them all much to the dislike of the “official” wedding shooters and a couple of brides but hey they were out in public and I had my camera.  Besides brides are always beautiful. 🙂

Barb on the rocks

We shot, discussed, and taught for a couple of hours and then stopped at the Star Brewery to review the images they had taken and to  have a quick lesson with Photoshop Lightroom 5 Beta.  They had both downloaded the free beta 5 version and so I showed them my typical work flow to get my RAW images processed.  It was a lot to throw at them all at once but they assured me it was helpful and they want to do it again.  We talked about meeting in Cedar Rapids the next time as there are more of their friends that are in the same situation and want to learn some of the fundamentals.

Anyway it was a lot of fun for me to talk about photography and just shoot a lot of interesting things.  I enjoyed it thoroughly.   That’s it for today.  I’ll show you some of the images from the river walk session plus some family happenings as well later in the week.  Hope you had a great weekend as well.  Enjoy your Monday.  Thank you for stopping by and be careful.
