September-24-2013

Happy Hump Day.  There was a time when I would hit golf balls every day.  If I wasn’t playing golf I would be on the practice range hitting golf balls or at the very least practicing my chipping in the back yard.  In the winter time I would putt almost every evening downstairs on the carpet to a variety of targets.  I was obsessed with golf and about getting better.  I watched golf on television, read two monthly golf magazines and watched the Golf Channel religiously.  There was also a time when my mood (or how I judged the day) was a reflection of my last golf game and how good or poorly I had played.

September-24-2013-A

I have little if any athletic ability.  But with a lot of practice and many lessons from local PGA pros I was able to get my handicap down to a 9.  My goal for years was to get to a single digit and I remember very well the day I put my score for a round in the computer at the pro shop and it gave me my new handicap of 9.1.  Wow! I was on cloud 9.  It’s just a matter of time I thought until I’m a 2, or a 1, or dare I even think about it, me being a 0 handicap.  Well that never happened.  I would bounce between a 9 and a 12.  When I was at a 12 handicap I was unhappy and when I was at a 9 handicap I was unhappy because I could not get my handicap any lower.  No matter how hard I worked at it.

Then I started working out-of-town.  My work started getting in the way of practicing.   Playing took a back seat to advancing my career.  My game suffered a lot and my handicap started heading North.  It was also about this time that golf stopped being fun.  In fact it got to be a lot of work.  I can remember sitting at the breakfast bar on a Saturday morning watching the weather radar hoping that it would rain the game out.

Finally I took a demit from the Country Club I belonged to because it didn’t make sense to pay a lot of money to do something that was no longer fun for me.   I would still play occasionally and would play in events, but no more than 10 to 15 times during the season.  The last three years I have played no more than 2 to 3 times each year.  Yesterday was my third time playing this year and the first time this year playing 18 holes.

September-24-2013-B

Photography has always been a part of my life and at times a pretty important part especially when the kids were little.  I never really worked at it or tried to improve because I just enjoyed taking pictures. I always received a lot of satisfaction from photography but it always took a back seat to other things.  Then in 2000 I bought my first digital camera.  A 1.2 megapixel point and shoot camera and it opened a flood gate of enjoyment for me.  To be able to see my images as soon as I took them and then to be able to manipulate them in Photoshop was the icing on the cake.  It was such a fun time for me of exploring and learning new things.

However it was not until I stumbled across Scott Kelby that I really got serious about getting as good as I could be at photography.  Not for any accolades, or to make money at it (although that is a nice benefit) but just to be able to capture an image of what I saw or to create a piece of art from my imagination.  Photography lets me do that and it is very satisfying.  I never had any artistic talent but photography lets me express my vision and emotion through my images.

Why am I rambling on about golf and photography?  I’m not really sure other than as I was thinking about playing yesterday and it struck me as ironic how things work.  Yesterday was a perfect day (weather wise.)  I was playing with three very nice people who I count as friends.  I even had some good shots on the day (although not many.)  What did I enjoy the most.  The images I captured on the golf course.  I would have taken a lot more but they kept telling me to hit the ball.  🙂

Enough pontificating for one day.  Thanks for checking out the blog.  Enjoy your Hump Day and be careful.

Happy Tuesday.  I have three completely unrelated images for you today that are from Saturday’s shoot.  I finished up another project yesterday, so now I’ve only got a couple more things that I’ve promised to do for people to get off my plate and I’ll finally be caught up.  🙂

I always enjoy taking pictures of the Spirit of Dubuque river boat.  This is not a particularly good shot but I saw it on the river and I couldn’t resist shooting it.

September-20-2013-3B

With almost 600 images made of Great Egrets over the weekend I’ve got to show at least one more.  What you do not see in this image is the 15 minutes I spent removing debris and junk that have accumulated around the Basin.  From the ubiquitous water bottles to tennis balls and everything in between.  With the water level as low as it is all the ugly junk that people throw in the water is beginning to show up.  It is hard to take a picture at the Basin free of junk. 😦

September-20-2013-3C

Finally this candid street image shot at the Farmers’ Market.  I like to find a spot that is out-of-the-way of traffic and look for interesting people to capture.  By the time we arrived last Saturday there were not a lot of people around.  I watched this threesome for several moments but they always had their back to me.  Putting food in their mouth is still not a flattering image but better than a butt shot.

Nothing very inspiring about today’s post.  Not the images nor the cometary.  I get a rare opportunity to play golf this afternoon with a Client so that should be enjoyable.  I originally turned down the offer and then was reminded by my friend that even a bad day at the golf course is better than a good day at the office.   Covey said, “No one on their death-bed every said I regret not spending more time at the office.”

Thanks for stopping by and your continued support of the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Thank God It’s Finally Monday.  Okay, yes that’s a bit of stretch.  While I love the work that I do, I also enjoy wearing tee shirts, jeans, and doing my own thing.  I probably need the structure of my day job to keep me semi productive.  🙂

Sunday, late afternoon, as is our custom, Jeanne and I took a photo drive.  Saturday I had seen some Great Egrets at the 16th Street Basin but didn’t have a long enough lens with me to capture any decent images.  We arrived at the Basin around 5:45 p.m. just in time to capture the setting sun light on the pond.  There were several Egrets on the South side of the Basin and I was able to slowly move the car into a good shooting position.

September-22-2013-B

They actually seemed quite comfortable with my position and one of them walked back and forth (fishing) about 50 yards away for a long time, so I had a great shooting distance.  I racked off 600 shots over a period of about 20 minutes.  About 2/3 of those were soft because I had forgotten to adjust the Vibration Reduction switch on the 80 – 400 mm lens.  The last time I had shot with that lens I had used a tripod.  😦  So I deleted over 400 shots of shots that were not sharp.  Truth of the matter is of course I don’t think I need 400 images of the same Egret walking back and forth.  🙂

September-22-2013

We then drove down to the little park just off the River Road.  We enjoy going there as there are usually a lot of gulls around and sometimes other kinds of wildlife.  This day there was a man on a motorcycle was feeding the gulls and they were plentiful.   Flying all around him trying to get some of the bounty he was dispersing.  The shot above is not cropped at all.  In fact I took it at the 200 mm focal length and still couldn’t get the entire gull in the frame.

I hope you had a great weekend.  Enjoy your Monday and as always thanks for stopping by the blog.  Be careful.

Joshua

Happy Sunday!  Hope you are having an enjoyable weekend.   Jeanne, Angie, Josh, Gabby, and I went to the Farmers’ Market again yesterday.  It was another perfect day, but we got there kind of late and there wasn’t as much to shoot as last weekend.  I did take some street photography shots but most of those were from the rear and just like with wildlife it is unflattering to take a butt shot.  🙂

It was so much fun watching Josh experience everything.  After awhile Jeanne started carrying him and then he wanted me to carry him because I held him higher than Grandma.  So I decided to put him on my shoulders but that proved to be a little too high for his taste.

September-21-2013-1A

I won’t be able to attend the Farmers’ Market next weekend as Maquoketa is having a huge celebration (Home Coming Weekend) and the Hillbilly Hot-Foot and Color Me run.  I will be there most of the day taking pictures and doing my thing as a Chamber Board Member.  It should be a lot of fun and there will be lots of activities, music, kid’s rides and activities, the run itself, and food vendors.  Then in the evening we will have a Muscle on Main, featuring vintage cars from the Coronado Car Club of Maquoketa.

If you are looking for something fun to do next Saturday you might consider driving the 25 miles South of Dubuque to Maquoketa.

September-21-2013-1B

After the Market, Ben was able to join us and we had lunch (breakfast) at the Burnt Toast Restaurant next to the Okay Doaky Store.  Wow what a great place to eat breakfast.  I can count the number of times on one hand that I have not been able to finish my meal because I was just too full.  That was the case Saturday.  The three egg ham, bacon, and cheese omelet with the cheesy hash browns and sour dough toast were just more than I could handle.

I also have to tell you that my omelet was one of the (if not the) best omelets I have every enjoyed.  I can highly recommend the Burnt Toast with our reservation.  Speaking of which you won’t need a reservation either.  🙂

Before lunch, while I was waiting on Jeanne, Angie, Ben and the Kids I drove down to the 16th street basin.  I didn’t really expect to see anything but to my surprise and delight there were 8 Great Egrets at the Basin.  I only had the 28- 300 mm lens so I didn’t really get any good shots of them but I will slip down there again today with a bigger lens to see if they are still there.

Finally I can tell you that I finished the wedding pictures and they are ready to give to the bride.  I have three other projects to finish up and then I’m going to be very selective about what I take on next.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your Sunday and be careful.

September-20-2013

Happy Saturday!  I shot this image on the way home last evening.  It is rapidly becoming the time of the year that I enjoy the most.  Crisp cool temperatures, golden sunlight (during my commute), fall colors, and harvest time.  I really enjoy taking images of the harvest.  Much more so than of the planting and cultivating.  There is just something so special about this time of year and the flood of wonderful memories it brings.

It’s been a busy week and I still have a few wedding images to process but that should be all finished up by the end of today if I stay on task.  Jeanne and I plan to visit the Farmers’ Market again this morning.  I’d like to do some more street photography.  It really depends on the weather.  I think it is supposed to be a great weather day with highs only in the 60s.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by the blog this day.  I hope you enjoy the weekend.  Safe travels if you are on the road and of course as always please be careful.

Happy Friday!  It took its sweet time getting here,  but it finally did.  Yesterday I spent most of the day at Camp Courageous near Monticello, Iowa.  What a wonderful place for folks with special needs.  The facility itself is magnificent and is only surpassed by the caring and dedicated staff that supports the visitors.

We held a culture day for some of our staff and along with other team members we taught customer service, our ability to choose our attitude, and a host of other organizational and cultural items.  It is a fun day filled with lots of energy, music, good food, and comradely.

The images for today’s post are from last Saturday Farmers’ Market and they are some of the more colorful sights at the Market.

September-14-5B-2013

A couple of my friends and followers of this blog have asked me if I would show my top five favorite steps in Lightroom for the post processing phase of RAW images.  There are lots of videos out on the internet about that very subject but for them I am going to see if I can put together my favorite workflow in a short video presentation to help them get more familiar with and more out of LR5.  I’ll work on it this weekend as I’ve just about got the wedding images done. 🙂

September-14-5C-2013

My plan is to go back to the Farmers’ Market tomorrow and do some more street photography.  That is the plan, but Saturdays are made for sleeping in, so who knows what will happen.

I hope you have a great day.  Fridays are usually special and Friday evenings are even more special.  Thanks for checking out the blog and be careful.

September-14-4A-2013

Happy Hump Day.   Late night last night and an early morning today will keep this post very short.  I enjoyed these flowers from the Farmers’ Market last Saturday and wanted to share their wonderful colors with you today.  Sorry about the brevity of the post.  Lots on my plate right now and the evil GTA5 was released yesterday.  🙂

Have a safe day today.  Enjoy the sunshine.  The temperature is creeping back up.  I’ll be happiest when the highs for the day are in the 60s.

Thanks for stopping by. Be careful.

September-16-2013

Big day today if you are a gamer.  If not then have pity on us poor fools who are.  Today GTA5 is released and even though I’m working late tomorrow I’ll have to stop at Best Buy and get my copy on my way home.

I was worried about the Cygnets over the weekend and I didn’t see them this morning so I made a point to stop by the Duck Pond last evening on my way out-of-town.  The good news is they seem to be doing fine.  The pond is really low and not much water anywhere but enough for them and the little Coots that were swimming by when I made this capture.

September-14-3A-2013

A couple more images from the Farmer’s Market last Saturday.  I intended for both of these images to be in black and white.  I’m told that the Amish do not like to have their picture taken. Yet I’ve seen many images of them.  I thought this one would be okay since you cannot see his face.  I really missed a great shot and through my own ineptness it got away from me.  There was a gentleman who was confined to a wheel chair.  He had the most interesting face, chiseled with age and hard knocks.  It would have been an interesting image.    I tried to take it without him knowing I was taking it and that was a mistake.  He left without me getting the image and I’m willing to bet if I had simply asked him if I could take his image he would have said yes.  My loss.

September-14-3B-2013

I have a lot more images from the Farmers’ Market to show you during the week.  Some good and some, well you’ve heard the phrase the good, the bad, and the ugly.  🙂

Enjoy your day today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog. Please be careful.

September-14-2013-2B

Happy Monday.  As fun of a day as Saturday was, Sunday was quite and uneventful.  Spent most of the day processing wedding pictures from last week’s shoot.  I still have a lot of them to process so I’ll be doing that most of the week.

I wanted to share some of the images from the Farmers’ Market on Saturday.  This musical group was playing in a prominent location at the Market and they were playing mostly 70s music.  At least that is what it sounded like to me.  What struck me as interesting about the group is how young they are compared to the music they were playing.  🙂

September-14-2013-2C

They produced a nice sound and the lead vocalist was a little more aligned with the music they were playing.  We could hear them as we walked around the Market and like I said they had a good sound.  There is always music at the Farmers’ Market, usually several different kinds music playing at different ends of the Market.  Saturday was no exception with a small group playing acoustic guitars and signing more of blue grass type genre.

September-14-2013-2A

There was also a lady with synthesized background music singing more country and western music.   Always fun things to see, smell, eat, and hear at the Market.  I intend to go back this coming Saturday and shoot some more images.  I would really like to get more practice with street photography.

Hope you have a great Monday.  It’ll be here the entire day so might as well enjoy it.  Thanks for checking out the blog and be careful.

September-14-2013-1A

One of the best Saturdays in recent memory yesterday.  First of all it was a perfect day weather wise.  Sunny, cool, and a slight breeze with the temperature around the mid 60s.  In my book it doesn’t get any better than that.  Jeanne and I have meant to get down to the Farmers’ Market all summer.  I don’t know why we are so hesitant about going because it is a treasure trove of sights, sounds, smells, colors, and interesting people.  I always come away with some wonderful images.

September-14-2013-1C

I love capturing images of people.  Whether it be in a formal portrait setting or candid shots.  It really doesn’t matter to me.  I’ve taken a lot of lessons on street photography but I haven’t had much practice.  I saw a hundred shots yesterday I wanted to take but then again I don’t want to upset anyone or ruin anyone’s day.    I did capture some interesting images of interesting people but like a poor fisherman, “The ones that got away, oh my.”  🙂

Jeanne was looking at things for supper and I was looking for things to capture images of so our focus was not always congruent with each others.  None the less she did point out some shots worthy of taking.

September-14-2013-1D

After Farmers’ Market we stopped over to see Angie and the kids as Ben was working and she wanted some company.  I’m starting to build a relationship with Gabby now.  She actually smiles when I come into her view.  Not nearly as much as she does when she sees Jeanne or Angie, but I’ll take what I can get.  I held her for a very long time yesterday and had no issues.  🙂

September-14-2013-1B

Later in the afternoon (after a nice lunch and wonderful nap) Angie and the kids came over and we went to playground at the nearby elementary school.  Josh is such a social young boy.  He asked several other kids (all older than him) if they wanted to play but none of them were interested.  So he would play with Grandma until another group of kids would come by.

The playground is a magnet for young children and they come in, play hard and then leave.  Many parents bring their children over to play and it is a nice addition to the neighborhood.

Finished the day off with a nice dinner on the grill and a black raspberry pie (with ice cream of course) that Jeanne bought from an Amish food stand at the market.  WOW was it great!!

Our neighbors always host a big football party when the Hawks play the Cyclones.  It’s been fun watching them prepare for the game this week and they had a nice turn out.  They do a  lot of grilling and I could tell when the Hawks scored by the cheers.  They are great neighbors and we enjoy having them in the neighborhood.

That’s it for today.  I hope you enjoy your day.  Thanks for stopping by.  More from the Farmers’ Market as the week unfolds.  Be careful.
