Happy Monday.  Let me get this in before I get too far.  I started a new biking blog today.  It’s not completely set up yet but you can click here to see the latest ride information and that way I won’t clutter my photography blog with my efforts to get back into shape.  🙂

A short blog today as I spent most of the evening last night and what little time I had this morning on getting the new blog set up.  More work than I imagined.  Thanks for stopping by today.  I’ll do better tomorrow.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

August-03-2013-2

We had a wonderful afternoon and evening with our good friends Steve and Becki Kent on their beautiful farm the Lazy K.  It was a perfect day to visit this tranquil setting.  Lots of trees, prairie grass, a pond and wild life in abundance. We even had a young white tail deer stop by for a visit while we were enjoying dessert on the screened in deck.

August-03-2013-2A

I made a number of images yesterday although only about a quarter that I normally take when we visit the farm.  They have a lot of metal art work that adorns their home and grounds.  I took some images of a few of them and I’ll share those with you later in the week.  Today is about bugs.  I am always amazed when I take the time to stop and look at just some of the insect world.

Steve and I took a tour of one of the corn fields on his “gator” and the insect world is alive and well.  I didn’t have the opportunity to photograph much of it as I had to wrong lens for that type of work but it is very interesting to watch the workings of all the insects and how they intertwine with one another.

August-03-2013-2B

I followed this butter fly for 7 or 8 minutes trying to capture his wings open.  he was not cooperative one bit.  This was really the only usable image I managed to get and it really sucks (but I needed it to fill out the blog.)  🙂

An evening with great friends, wonderful food, stimulating conversation and a few glasses of wine.  Doesn’t get much better than that I think.  Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your Sunday, looks like another good one and be careful.

August-03-2013

Happy Saturday.  It is rare for me to post a blog on Saturday and even more rare to post one this late in the day.  Having said that here is a shot recount of my first real bike ride in more than three years.  One of the fun things about riding the bike is that I can take my little point and shoot camera with me and get some images that I normally wouldn’t get.  It was a spectacular day to ride of do about anything.  The temperature was a mild 77 degrees with very little wind.

Ride Details:  Actual ride time 1:37:35.  Total distance covered 18. 1 miles.  Average speed 11.1 mph (not too bad for first time out.) Highest speed attained 31.1 mph.  Two bottles of water consumed and three small rest breaks taken.

August-03-2013-A

The bike was great!  I’m going to really enjoy this bike.  All the gears functioned well with no skipping of gears as I have experienced on other bikes I have owned.  It handles the hills really good and feels solid under me.  Fun ride today as I did the Mt Carmel Spin.  I don’t really like riding the city streets because of all the traffic but it was tolerable today.

Hope you have a great weekend.  We’re off to have a photo shoot and dinner with some great friends.  Hope to have some images of that for you tomorrow.  Thanks for checking out the blog on this super Saturday, assuming that is if you indeed did check it out.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Friday :) ~ August 02, 2013

Pinta

Good Day and Happy Friday.  I am so ready for the weekend and then in not too many days a mini vacation for Jeanne and I.  We will be traveling to God’s Country and breathing some great air.  🙂  I’ll send a post card.

Last Sunday Jeanne and I went down to the river and shot some images of the replicas of the Nina and Pinta.  The background was terrible but there wasn’t anything I could do about that.  It would have been great to capture their image on the river.  Anyway I hope you enjoy the images.

Nina

Now for a rant.  If you are not in the mood just look at the pictures and stop reading here.  I know it is not a new lament for me or for that matter for a lot of people.  The level or better said, lack of customer service in some retail stores is appalling.  I won’t even go into the buying process, which by the way, I walked out of two stores for lack of anyone even acknowledging my presence after 15 minutes.

So I bought a hybrid bicycle the other evening because I need to get some exercise and with my right knee problem, lots of walking is out of the question.   The whole process took about 15 minutes so there was no sales effort  on the part of the clerk.  I told him what I wanted including accessories and he simply rang them up.  I even told him I’d pick up the bike the next night so there was no hurry to get it set up.  I picked up the bike the next night (oh by the way the kid who sold me the bike was gone and they couldn’t find my bike for awhile.)  I rode it a total of 5 miles (long enough to realize how much I’ve missed riding) and then put it away.

Then all day yesterday I was anticipating doing a moderate ride when I got off work.  Well after some unforeseen delay I suited up and was ready to go.  Ugh, back tire flat as could be.  So I aired it up and took off.   I didn’t get far before I had to call Jeanne to come get me and my flat tire.  We took it back to the store and there was a whole new crew of kids working.  So I told them I had just bought the bike the night before and I needed to get the tire fixed.

Twilight

Out came the repair guy telling me that they didn’t put the tires on the bike so it wasn’t their fault and then he started asking me what I had done with the bike since purchasing it.  Finally he said you buy the tube and we’ll install it for half price and then he said for nothing, I suppose in response to the look I gave him.

What frustrates me the most is that the Organization I work for absolutely works day and night to give the best customer service possible.  One of my responsibilities is to help coach our staff on customer service.  Do we make mistakes?  Sure but we also work hard to fix the problem and do our best to not let it happen again.  Doing what it takes and going the extra mile when something (not even your fault) goes wrong to satisfy the customer is what is missing so often today.  So because we live and breathe customer service where I work it really irritates me when I do not receive exceptional or even marginal customer service.

On the flip side the optical department of Medical Associates simply rocks.  I bought a pair of rim less glasses  from them a few years ago.  I hated them.  I tolerated them for six months and finally decided that I was going to get a different pair.  I called the optical department to see if they had my prescription and could I pick it up.  Sure come on in was the response.  So I stopped in and the guy asked me why I needed the prescription.  I told him that I didn’t like the rim less glasses and I was going to shop around for another pair.  He said we’ll replace them for you for no cost.  Huh?  I said I picked these out.  I insisted on the rim less glasses even though the technician suggested they were not possibly the best frames for me.

Doesn’t matter was the response.  But I said, they are over six months old.  doesn’t matter was the response.  They gave me new frames for no additional cost to me and I was a happy camper.  Guess where I’ve bought my last three pair of glasses.  Have they made mistakes?  A couple but they apologized profusely, and most important they made it right without excuses.  That is the difference.

Okay, done.  If you’re still here thanks for letting me vent.  I hope you have a fantastic Friday and a great weekend.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful.

July-29-2013-1A

Happy Hump Day.  Earlier in the week I had an opportunity to tour a tree farm and look at some prairie grass and wild flowers.  I did a shoot of this tree farm a couple of years ago and this is a new growth of prairie grass since that time.

July-29-2013-1B

We toured the farm in a 4 X 4 and that is a great way (for someone who doesn’t like snakes) to get around.  🙂    There are a lot of old trees and many new ones of varying species.  Two years ago I photographed a giant oak tree that would be over 150 years old.

July-29-2013-1C

We didn’t have much time to tour the farm but it was a beautiful day with the temperature in the mid 60s.

Short post today as I’m late as usual.  Enjoy your mid-week hump day.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful.

July-29-2013

Happy Tuesday.  Looks like another nice day in the 70s.  I was looking back on my 365 project from last year and the temperature was in the 100 degree range for several days.  In fact I took a picture of the bank thermometer registering 102 degrees.  I really enjoy these cooler temperatures.

July-29-2013-B

I stopped at the Duck Pond on the way home last night to check on the Cygnets.  I was a little concerned because on my way to work I caught a glimpse of them and I could only see one.  The water at the Duck Pond is dropping again, which means they are soon going to be easy prey to predators.  My guess is the parents can do a pretty good job of protecting them.  The image above is a cropped shot just to get a better view of the children.  I tried to take the South end of the North bound swan out of the image but for some reason I couldn’t make it look right so after spending 15 minutes on it I decided to go with what I had.  🙂

July-29-2013-A

I’m not sure if the Mother or Father was leading the parade but all of a sudden the lead swan stopped to grab something from the bottom and the little Cygnet crashed into her rear end.  There was a lot of confusion and then they finally got untangled and back in line.  I’ll keep you updated on their progress through the season.  Hope they make it.

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

July-28-2013

Happy Monday.  Hope you had an enjoyable weekend.  Yesterday Jeanne and I went to the River Walk.  We always see some interesting things there and there is always something to capture an image of.  We particularly wanted to see the old ships, Nïna and Pinta.  I could only get so close to them and then you had to pay.  Jeanne and I took a tour of the Nïna several years ago with the kids.  That was back in the days of film and I have many images of that tour.  So I wasn’t interested in the tour again.  Besides from where I would have to pay to shoot I would have been shooting directly into the setting sun.

So we hoofed it around the River Center and shot them from the other side.  Lots of clutter but I did manage to get some shots of the two tall ships.  While we were on that side of the harbor we discovered a train wheel bone yard.

July-28-2013-A

Lots of discarded train wheels and axles for one reason or another.  Many of them had “bad” painted on the axle or wheel, still others were lined up just sitting in the sun gathering more rust.  Anyway they caught my eye and they looked interesting.  We spent several minutes looking at the collection of wheels.

July-28-2013-B

We arrived at the river in time to see the Twilight pull in and dock.  There was a band playing at the gazebo.  Sue Hattel a friend of ours was playing her clarinet with the band.  I wanted to capture some images of them playing but they were in the shade of the gazebo and I would have had to make a bunch of adjustments to the camera so I opted for lazy and just enjoyed the music for a time.

I have some more shots I’ll show as the week unfolds.  Tech Specs ~ [ Nikon D4 | Nikon 80  – 400 AF-S ED VR Lens | ISO 100 1/160 sec @ f8 ] Enjoy your Monday.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful where you step.

Joshua Roling

Fun day yesterday as Angie brought the kids over for us to watch while she did a run.  We had a good time playing toys for awhile and then Joshua decided he wanted to go downstairs.  We do not have a big house but there is an extra room downstairs that we have no need for so we turned it into a playroom for our kids.  Most of their toys, forts, doll houses, etc. were kept in that room and they could play down there for hours.  It is now Josh’s favorite room.

Josh painting

He enjoys coloring and painting and Jeanne has some paints and brushes for him to paint with.  We couldn’t find the brushes at first so we colored and drew with (washable) markers.  I was able to find a brush, finally and he was delighted to be able to paint.

July-27-2013-B

We bought Fisher Priced toys for our kids.  They were well made, safe, colorful, and reasonably priced.  They have stood the test of time.  None of them take batteries, and they do not have lights or sounds but they are fun to play with and they let your imagination run wild.  So after Josh was finished painting we got out the “little peoples” and played with them for a long time.  I can see his imagination growing.  After we were through playing he said to me, “We have to put these away now.”  Sure enough he went around the room and filled the three boxes with all the toys he’d been playing with.  My kids never did that.  🙂

July-27-2013-C

So it was fun morning with our grand kids.  Gabby was smiling in her car seat when Angie stopped over.  I peeked in on her and she started to frown.  I pulled away and Angie moved in and the frown was gone.  I picked her up and it only took about 3 minutes before the tears started flowing.  We apparently have not bonded yet.  😦

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day, it looks like a great one weather wise.  Be careful.

Demolition Cars

Happy Friday.  I was out looking for photos yesterday and went by this farm with these “demolition derby” vehicles sitting in their front yard.  You notice a lot of these vehicles in different locations this time of year with all the county fairs happening during the month of July.

Maquoketa is no different.  The county fair is a big deal and it is prepared for, talked about, and anticipated for months before it happens.  The opening day of the fair there is a big parade and people start putting their lawn chairs and blankets on the side walks of the parade route early in the morning.  The parade doesn’t start until 6:00 p.m., so that most everyone can enjoy it.

If you own something with 2 or more wheels (or no wheels come to think about it) you can be in the parade.  Sometimes there are more people in the parade then watching it.  🙂  I didn’t stay for the parade this year as I had another project that needed my attention.  In years past I have photographed some of the more interesting aspects of the parade.  Perhaps next year.

I remember growing up, the fair was special.  The Harrison County fair was the main event of the year.  You saw things you hadn’t seen before, saw people you hadn’t seen since the last fair, and the smells, ah yes the smells, the good, the bad, and certainly the ugly.  🙂

As a teenager (always needing money) I flipped burgers at the food tent.  The owner of the cafe in Ridgeway had a vendor’s license and she always hired me to be the grill cook.  It was pretty good money, I got in the fair for free and my shift ended around 9:00 p.m., still plenty of time to hang with my friends (although we didn’t call it hanging back then)  and even do some of the rides.    Once in a while (if I were lucky) some of the strippers would come in for lunch and that was always interesting as well.  🙂

By the end of the week I actually got to know some of the Carnies pretty well.  I would listen to their stories and enjoy bantering with them.  Like all things there were some good folks who were down on their luck and they were doing what they had to do to survive.  Others were a reflection of our society, complete drop-outs looking for the next drink.  It was an education for me.

:)

I’ll let your imagination run with this image.  🙂

There was a big article in this morning’s TH about the vintage airplanes practicing at the Dubuque Regional Airport.  Mike Burley (a photo journalist for the TH) got to ride in one of the planes and took some  fantastic images of the planes flying over Dubuque.  I’m so envious.  All that means is that it will be packed this weekend at the observation area and probably hard to get a good shot of the planes.

Well that’s it for today.  I hope you were able to follow my mindless babble about what I’m not sure.  Enjoy your Friday.  Thanks for stopping by, watch where you step and be careful.

Twin Engine Airplane

I knew the war birds are supposed to be at the Dubuque airport tonight but I took a chance last night and stopped by the airport to see if by chance there were some early arrivals.   There were 6 or more of them sitting on the tarmac.  Two of them had their engines running so I hung around a while to see if they were going to do any formation flying.

When this twin-engine plane took off on the runway adjacent to the observation area I thought I might be in luck.  It was a beautiful evening with blue sky and lots of clouds.  The temperature was a reasonable 66 degrees it was perfect.

Landing

I was pretty happy to see two of the T28s heading for the runway but to my dismay they went all the way over to the far runway that runs North and South.  That is really too far away for a decent shot even with my 500 mm lens.  So they took off heading North and my hopes for a fly by quickly faded as they continued North until they were out of sight.  I was starting to pack up when two more of the planes started up.

Taking off

They also took off North and did a big circle but simply came back and landed on the same runway.  I waited another 20 minutes but it was obvious there would be no more flights this evening.  So I did get a couple of shots of the war birds all be they some distance from me.

I have to do training in Cedar Rapids this evening so I won’t have a chance to check out the airport until Friday.  Hope you have a great day.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful (i.e. watch your step.)
