Happy Thursday!

Yesterday I went down to the Mill Work District (MWD) looking for things to photograph.  I have taken many images at the MWD but always seem to fine new things to explore.

When we first moved to Dubuque in the 70s the MWD was mostly abandoned buildings that had been occupied by light industrial businesses.  They sat empty and decaying for a long time.  Then as so often happens a couple of men with a vision of what could be bought up many of the buildings and turned them into upscale offices, eateries, and apartments.

Now the MWD is THE destination place for a lot of the younger people for the craft breweries, restaurants, and fitness centers.  Even one of the News Channels has an office there.

As you will notice in some the images there are ominous clouds building.  I had just washed my truck and I thought, as I took my last image, I think I can make it home before the rain comes.  I was wrong.

Hope you enjoyed the trip to the Mill Work District, though my lens.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Thank you for coming to my blog.  I hope you have had a great day.

Monday is this little guy’s first birthday. His Mom and Dad held a pre-birthday celebration and invited all the family to attend. It was a fun event and got to meet lots of people.

Brooks got to do the smash cake routine, but for some reason he wasn’t all that interested in the cake. His actions were pretty funny. If you like you can check out the video at the bottom of the blog. It’s only 4 minutes.

It took some help from Mom and Dad to get into the cake but as you can see below He did a pretty good job of it.

Check out the video below.

Awesome Saturday to All.

Went outside and sat down on the patio.  Saw this awesome sky, so I grabbed a drone and set it up to get a better look.

The mastery of God’s brush is amazing.  I flew the drone straight up to about 200 feet and just did a slow turn.

Hope you enjoy the scene.  Be careful out there.

I hope everyone is having a great day.  Welcome to the blog.

I was in Maquoketa on Tuesday last week and knowing how much rain we have had of late I thought I would run down to the dam and see what was going on.

The image above is below the dam and you can see there is a lot of water coming down from the dam.

This image show how the wind and water have felled a large tree on the bank of the river.

This is what I love about drones. You cannot get a image like this from the ground.

There is a short video of the dam (only 3:25 minutes.)

Good Sunday Greetings.

I’m very reflective as I write today’s blog.  The blog is almost 14 years old and for a lot of those 14 years I was posting material every day.  I loved taking pictures and sharing them with those who took the time to visit.

I was very active while working 50 to 60 hours a week.  I thought that when I retired I would really up my photography game and learn new things and new techniques and post more blogs than normal.  I was wrong.  The photography and blog posts dwindle to about once or twice a month.  On any given year I would average 10,000 to 12,000 images a year.  So on my various external hard drives I have close to 100,000 images.

I’m talking about this because I came to a cross roads this year.  Because of my chronic health issues I had to give up golf.  I guess I didn’t realize just how much time and resources golf was taking out of my life.

So when I made the decision I resigned from the golf club I was a member of, sold my cart and took up drone flying again.  That is a entirely different story for another time.  Suffice it to say it didn’t take too long to eat up the money I sold the golf cart for.  🙂

Which brings me to the other point I wanted to talk about.  I have a serious chronic condition known as GAS.  Better stated NAS.  GAS & NAS stand for Gear Acquisition Syndrome.  Substitute gear for Nikon (which is what I shoot) and you get the idea.

Some times it was hard for me to tell whether my passion was photography or gear acquisition.  The two were compatible as long as I was working and had a steady income. But when I retired and had a fixed income the two were no longer compatible at all.  🙂

Now I have to throw in the wild card.  When I retired I had the (then) Nikon flagship top camera the wonderful D5.  I also had a D4S plus a crop sensor D500.  When I took the photography course with Bill Fortney and Joe McNally in Nashville I found that I was not an aberration at all.  There were 24 students at the school and we were all gear heads.  I actually felt normal.

Anyway I digress.  When in the last few years the entire photography community became enthralled with mirror less cameras I thought to myself there is no way I’m going to do that.  I love my DSLR and the sound the shutter makes when the mirror flops up.

So after much pondering I decided to jump in but with some hesitation.  I found a Nikon “entry level cropped sensor” the Z50.  It was a great bargain and after doing some research from YouTube University, it sounded like it would meet my needs.  There was indeed a learning curve and I’m still learning about it.  However I was pleased with the results of the images I took so I was happy with my purchase.

Well then I came across the Nikon Z5.  Again an “entry level” full frame camera.  However it has the same features as the more expensive cameras.  And again I’m happy with the results and it has rekindled the photography passion in me.  So we will see if I start doing more.

So about these images.  They were all taken with the Z5 and the Z50.  I had never seen this ambulance before so I was taken aback when I saw it.  I had to photograph it.

It was either from WWII or more likely from the Korean War.  It had MASH # the rest of which I could not read.  As I was putting my gear away a couple from Chicago stopped and was admiring this wonderful machine.  They were taking pictures of each other and so I asked if they would like me to take a picture of the both of them.  They were grateful and happy to let me do that.  They handed me their iPhone and it was small and for some reason it fell out of my hand and onto the pavement.

Ugh, I told them I would pay for the damage but they insisted that it had been dropped many times before.  After inspecting the phone I could see that it had been dropped before.  They were so nice and gracious.  I gave them my card if they wanted to visit my blog.

Well that’s it if you made this far congratulations and thank you.

Enjoy your day and be careful.

THE HISTORIC DUBUQUE SHOT TOWER

A brief summary of 150 years of Dubuque’s #1 icon, the Shot Tower, a Civil War landmark….

Constructed in 1856 to manufacture lead shot ammunition, the Shot Tower is one of only a few

remaining shot towers in the United States, and the only one west of the Mississippi River. The

120-foot Shot Tower produced lead shot from 1856-58, and then was closed. It was briefly

refurbished for use during the first year of the Civil War. It was used by the Standard Lumber

Company as a fire watchtower from the late 1880s until the company was destroyed in the 1911

lumberyard fire. The tower stood deserted in its post-fire ruin from 1911 to 1959. The 1911 fire

destroyed the original wooden stairs, leaving no ready means to access the tower interior for

maintenance and repairs. In 1960-1961, the tower was repaired using methods that are now

known to promote deterioration. Mayor Roy Buol declared 2006 as the Year of the Shot Tower

in recognition of the structure’s sesquicentennial.

The train that you see in this video was the longest train I have ever seen.  It had two engines in the middle of the train to help supply additional  power.

Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Hump Day!

Just some random photos that I have taken over the last couple of days.  No connection with each other and no real reason for taking them just trying new things, trying to get better.

It’s been kind of cloudy and rainy for the last few days so I haven’t been out shooting for some time until the last couple of days.

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Monday!

We had a wonderful weekend.  Our daughter Angie J. Roling graduated with her Doctoral in Nurse Practice.   She has a long history of nursing.  Earning her BSN degree in 2007 and working as a floor nurse, a surgical nurse, and an ER nurse all at Mercy One hospital.

Obviously I am very proud of her.  She accomplished the feat while be a Mother of 4 young children.  Her support group included her Mother, her Mother-in-law and her wonderful husband Dr. Ben Roling.

After all the festivities from her pinning on Friday to her graduation commencement on Saturday, she and Ben had all of the family over for dinner on Saturday evening.

Angie and her Brother Mark, who is the General Manager of a large dealership in Dubuque.  They have supported each other through the good and bad times and I feel very blessed to be their Father and Jeanne as their Mother.

You know I had to show this picture of Brooks.  He is in his Daddies lap.

Since this is a basically photography blog I have to mention that  I purchased a new “bang around camera.  It is the crop sensor Nikon Z50.  I got it  because I got tired of lugging around all my gear every day just to lug it back to the house with nothing on the sensor cards.

The Z50 is tiny compared to my Nikon D5 or for that matter the Nikon P1000.  I take the Z50 and P1000 with me everywhere I go in a small back pack so there is no excuse for not getting “THAT” shot.

I am going to do my best to post on a more frequent basis.

Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Tuesday!

I have photographed this bridge (I call it the bridge to no where) many times in different weather conditions.  So I was at the Hurstville Lime Kilns and decided to fly up the river a bit to get a bird’s eye view of the bridge.

I don’t know what this bridge was for but it’s been there for the 24 years I’ve been photographing at and around the Hurstville area.

The Hurstville Lime Kilns are a testament to a different time.  I’m afraid I do not know the history of the Kilns but I’m sure you could Google it and find out some interesting stuff.  I’m sure I did at one time but have since forgotten.

I went past this need weeping willow tree on the way to Hurstville so I had to turn around and photograph it.

I made a shot video (4:30 sec) if you’re interested.

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Tuesday!

Yesterday I had lunch with my beautiful and wonderful daughter in the down town area.  It is always a great treat for me to spend one-on-one time with my children.  It keeps me connected and hopefully they enjoy it as well.

It was not a great day for photography with overcast sky and intermittent rain showers.  Having established that, I had nothing else to do and all day and all day to do it so, off to the river I went.  Remember you can enlarge any image by clicking on the image to reveal a much more detailed image.

As it turned out, since I’m not a “professional photographer” I don’t have to follow the rules and had a fun afternoon taking some “creative images.”   Well they were in my own mind.

I got chased to my truck more than once because of the rain but it was more disappointing later on.

I was a long way from my truck when I took this image and it started to rain at a pretty good clip.  so stuck my camera under my jacket and got under some shelter.

I ran into these really nice people and their dog.  They were getting ready to do the river walk and I asked them if I could take their picture.  They were kind enough to allow me to do so and introduced themselves to me.  We had a small chat and then they were on their way.  Two minutes later I totally forgot their names.  This happens quite frequently any more.  Damn!

I saw this train stopped on the overpass.  Often when trains are waiting for clearance to the bridge they will wait here.  I got the brilliant idea to fly my drone over the entire length of the train and back.  So I was getting the drone ready to fly and the heavens opened up with a substantial down pour.  Well, damn again.  By the time the rain stopped the train was gone.

So that’s all I have for you today.  Thanks for checking on the blog.

Have a peaceful day and be careful.
