juvenile eagle flys overhead

Happy Sunday!  Fun day yesterday filled with a lot of activity and I even had time for a nap.  Is this a great country or what.  I had an appointment to get my hair cut and as usual I found a way to delay my departure to the point that if I broke a few speed limit laws I could get there on time.  So that is the foundation of my saga on shooting yesterday.

I grabbed my D600 with the Nikon 80 – 400 mm VR lens.  What I wanted to take but didn’t have time to get it put together was the D4 and the 500 mm lens.  Yes I could have come all the way back to our home got that setup and then back to the river but that would have killed another hour.

So I’ll talk about the camera settings and all my excuses as to why this was a challenging shoot.  First of all it was a grey day.  Shooting images of eagles against that grey sky was like shooting a subject in front of a bright light source.  When I raised the shadows to bring out the details in the feathers the sky went almost pure white.  Should have used some exposure compensation but I didn’t think of it at the time.  😦

So I shot most of the 605 images at ISO 1000, 1/2000 of a second @ f8.0.  The D600 does not handle noise as well as the D4 but I think the software did a pretty good job of reducing it to acceptable levels.  I was totally unprepared for the shot above.  This juvenile flew over the top of me as I was just getting out of the car, so I didn’t have a change to get set up properly.

Mature Eagle Soars

It is difficult to shoot at Lock and Dam 10 because of the high fences and the location of the lock is such that it blocks a good view of the dam where the eagles fish.  So I decided to drive over to the Wisconsin side of the river and I did have better results there.  This image has almost no cropping to it as he was headed for a tree behind me and was nice enough to get close to my lens.

Even though the temperature was a balmy 29 degrees the wind was blowing with enough intensity that it got very cold after a short amount of time, which also slows down the action of the camera.  The D600 only shoots at 5 fps, which is pretty slow for shooting flying birds.  Additionally it has a small buffer so you can only rip off about 8 shots and then it has to write to the card, which means no more images until it clears out some of the buffer.  The D4 on the other hand shoots at a robust 11 fps and has a huge buffer.  I’ve shot as high as 30 – 40 images before it slowed down to write to the card.

Closing for the catch

This is an interesting image not from a technical stand point but because of the story behind it.  This young juvenile had been pestering the mature eagle for some time.  I made a lot of shots of them “dinking” with each other on the ice and occasionally in the air.   On this occasion the mature eagle suddenly diverted towards the river and made a great catch of a fair-sized fish.  I got the blurry image of him getting the prize but they are not worth showing.  Anyway the young eagle was left without any food as the older eagle took his catch across the river to the high bluff trees by Eagle Point Park.  Maturity has its benefits. 🙂

More to the story yet to come but that’s it for today.  Remember you can click on the images to view them in a larger format.   I hope you enjoy this day, cold as it’s going to be.  Thanks for stopping by.  Stay warm and be careful.

Hurstville Dam

Happy Saturday!

I’ve photographed the Hurstville Dam and posted it here on the blog several times before.  I’m always amazed however to see moving water freeze solid.  I understand how it happens but it never ceases to amaze me when I see it.

I went to lunch with a couple of friends from work yesterday and we opted to walk the three blocks to the restaurant.  That turned out to be a poor decision as the wind chill was harsh and the sidewalks were slick with frozen snow.  We made it without incident but the exposed parts (face and ears) were burning by the time we got there.  Then of course there is always the walk back.

Much more cold weather in store for us in the coming days.  I’m going to run down to the Lock and Dam this morning to see if there are eagles flying.  I haven’t been to the river since it froze over.

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your weekend and be careful.

Just an old barn

Happy Friday!  What a treat for me yesterday.  I didn’t have any lunch engagements so I grabbed my camera and drove around the area looking for something to shoot.  It felt so good to actually be out and about with my camera.

Many mornings on my way to work I will see something that interests me and I’ll think there is a shot I should have taken today.  By the time I get to work I may have 1 to 10 of those “should have taken” images in my mind.  Well this barn was one of those images.  I saw it on the way to work yesterday and it looked just great with the morning sun.  By the time I got back to it around noon the light was not as pretty as it was in the morning but I still like this old barn and the wagon on the side.

One clever little squirrel

I went down by the Hurstville Dam to see if anyone was at the river, fishing.  Nothing much going on there but on my way out of the area I caught sight of this little guy.  He let me get my camera all set up and window down and then as I brought the camera to my eye he took off.  I followed him for a little bit.  I’m not thrilled with this image but it is all he would give me so I took it.

I have a couple of more images that I took during the 20 minutes I had to shoot, but I’ll save those for another day.

That’s it for this day.  Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your Friday, stay warm and be careful.

Snowy Treee on New Year's Day

Happy New Year!

I had lunch with a very close friend yesterday and he was concerned that I hadn’t blogged for awhile.  I apologized to him and now to you for the lack of activity.  This is a tough time of the year to shoot photographs (for me anyway.)  I never have time in the morning on the way to work (and most days I see three or more things I’d like to shoot.)  Then it’s dark when I leave the office so overall there is just a narrow window available for photography.

Then it is the time of year.   I always have some challenges this time of year especially around the Holidays.  I seem to get in a funk and I think about all the family members on my side that have passed and I get weary.  I always seem to climb out of my funk and get back on track so no need to think I won’t this year as well.

I was reviewing 2013 from a photographic standpoint.  What a neat way to remember the year.  Since I usually take at least a few images every week and sometimes every day, it took a while to look at them all.  I kept 12,533 images from 2013.  I have no idea how many I shot during the year.  Since the D4 can rip off 11-12 fps it doesn’t take long to rack  up some pretty big numbers.  More than once I’ve come home with 700 or more images on my card only to end up with 20 keepers.

I took the image above this morning, out our back door in the snow.  It’s still snowing (lightly) and we are supposed to get another 4 inches.  I will get out today and shoot some snowy stuff.  🙂

Thanks for sticking with me.  I’ll get back up to speed soon enough.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

December-28-2013-B

Happy Monday.  Some family images today from our Christmas celebration with Angie and Ben.  They graciously hosted us for gifts, dinner and then some cards.  I couldn’t get Joshua to pose for me so there are no singles of him.  He was way too busy playing Santa Clause, handing out everyone’s gift and helping most people open their gifts. 🙂  He was a busy little boy.

December-28-2013

At least for now, I can usually get Gabby to look at me.  She has really pretty blue eyes and she’s fun to photograph

December-28-2013-A

It is always a treat to be with the kids and grand kids.  We had a wonderful meal and then all too soon it was time to go home.

Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

50 mph limit

Don’t ask me why I chose this image for today’s post.  I’ve been working on family images from Christmas the last two days and I guess I needed a change.  Anyway, I took this image Christmas Eve on the way home from work thinking it might come in handy for some type of composite image someday.  Who knew at the time it would garner a top ranked position on the blog.

Back to work today and then looking forward to our Christmas celebration with Angie and Ben.  Angie and the kids stopped over yesterday for lunch yesterday.   I didn’t even pull the camera out, just played and visited with everyone.  Josh didn’t know who I was without a camera up to my face. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by, sorry this is all I have for you today.  Enjoy the day and be careful.

Family Christmas - 2013

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with family, friends, and the other people you care about.  I wrote yesterday about traditions that come and go, or get modified.  One of the traditions that has endured (at least for me) is the family group photo at any event.  This goes way back to film days, even so it has endured these many years.

Yesterday we spent a total of seven hours on the road and visited and ate for six hours.  The drive home was difficult but certainly worth the effort.  I took a day off today, knowing that a day like yesterday is really tiring and with the weather so unpredictable I wasn’t sure if we would stay in Des Moines or be able to get home.  Anyway as I sit here reflecting about the day it was very satisfying.  I got to meet two new people who either have been or will be (hopefully) added to the family.  I also remembered those who couldn’t be there for one reason or another and those who have gone on before us.  It was a day to savor and enjoy.

Mark and Taylor

When we did get home Mark’s significant other, Taylor, joined us for a small Christmas exchange and then (old foggy that I am) it was off to bed.  Jeanne pulled off a pretty good trick on me and completely surprised me with her gift to me.  When she smiles the world is brighter and that is the Wonder of Her.

Saturday we will enjoy Angie, Ben and our wonderful Grand Children and Mark and Taylor will be here too. So a few days here and there and a new tradition is born.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

December-24-2013

Merry Christmas to you and the people you love.  Christmas (as I’ve often been told) is about tradition and the traditions we grew up with and share with our children.  I’m also acutely aware that life is about change.  It is always changing and evolving.  Very few things in life remain the same.  Even our beliefs over time are subject to some modification and perhaps even change.

December-24-2013-B

So it is with this Christmas of 2013.  For the first time in 66 years I did not celebrate Christmas Eve in the traditional sense.  Normally that involves a lite dinner, Church, and presents with the family and kids.  But life is after all about change.  Your family grows up and older.  People pass away and people intertwine their lives with another and pretty soon the traditions become blurred and obscure.  New ones emerge but they too are fleeting and soon become more of a memory than reality.

December-24-2013-A

Jeanne and I celebrated a very unusual Christmas this year.  For the first time in the 37 years we have celebrated Christmas, we did it by ourselves.  Not with a small dinner but with a roast beef complete with the trimmings.  Not with church but with the watching of the marathon of “A Christmas Story”, not with our children and grand children, nor even the dogs (they are at the kennel) but by ourselves in our recliners looking at the Christmas tree with all the blinking lights and ornaments from Christmases past.  With no anticipation or excitement about the wrapped gifts beneath the tree, they will be opened at a later time.

As I sat there in the dimly lit room and gazed at my life partner I thought to myself… “This is okay, life is about change and as long as we have each other we’ll face the changes that come with or without the traditions of years gone by.”

So I say again, Merry Christmas to you and the people you love.  Hold them close and cherish them because you just never know.    To my friends (whom I cherish) I say thank you for your friendship, it is a gift that I am unworthy of but I shall continue to strive to be so.

Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Safe travels, enjoy the day and be careful.

December-23-2013

Merry Christmas Eve.  I hope you are able to spend this blessed Holiday with the people you love and that love you.  I did something I rarely do on my way to work.  I stopped and shot a few images.  Of course I was late but I got behind a county snow plow and I couldn’t pass so when I saw something I wanted to capture I just stopped, got out of the car and shot the image.  It was just him and me on the road for about 10 miles.  A very slow 10 miles I might add.

December-23-2013-A

I have photographed this “shed” several times.  The sky was bright blue, the moon was up over head and the sun was rising on the front of the building.  How could I go wrong with that kind of a setting.  I’m not as happy with the second shot but still worth showing it to you.  It was pretty cold this morning, about -3 with a little wind, so I didn’t spend a lot of time composing my shots.

December-23-2013-B

I’m not sure what you will think of this shot.  It was the ice on the grass that caught my eye.  It looked a lot better in the view finder than it does here.  Still I like it so I thought I would share with you.

I hope you have a joyous Christmas.  Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy this day and be careful.

Looking Out Our Back Door

Happy Monday.  We received about 8 inches of snow yesterday and as snow goes it was a beautiful snow.  Our back yard looked like someone had taken glitter and sprinkled over the snow.

This image is from a snow storm that occurred December 20, 2012 looking out our back door.  Yes I was too veggie to even go out yesterday and capture some snow images.  Saturday I had planned to shoot some macro images of the ice and yesterday some snow scenes.  Alas the lure of a warm home and other distractions kept me safely ensconced in my man cave.  I’m so ashamed.

That’s it for today.  Enjoy the day, especially for those of you who do not have to work this week.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful.
