Happy Thursday!

A short post today as I have training all day and of course I’m running late.

This little bird perched on my new branch with leaves, which Jeanne thought would not happen.  🙂

Jeanne and I met with the dietitian yesterday afternoon.  It was comforting to know that what we’ve been doing was the right thing and she was very impressed with our progress.  We both learned a lot from her though so it was an hour well spent.

Looking back I think the way things worked out was best.  Had we met with her shortly after I was diagnosed I think we would have ended up with more questions than answers.  This way she confirmed what we were doing right and made suggestions on things we should change.  Additionally providing some insight that we had not considered.

Enjoy your day today.  Fall is here and I love it.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Be careful.

Happy Wednesday!!

About a year ago one of my good friends from work asked me if I would photograph her family and of course I agreed.  Well weather, moving, and life in general kept us from getting that done until last night.

We had actually planned to do this about a month ago but the weather again didn’t cooperate.  The weather last night was perfect and the light was a nice soft orange glow so we were able to take some images.

I really have a new respect for child photographers.  They have much more creativity and patience than I do.  My focus is on the shot not getting the kids to look at the camera and giving a natural smile.   I got some good shots but a child photographer would have gotten a lot more.

It was a fun time however and I think they will be pleased.  This is the only one I processed but the proofs of some of the other images are pleasing to me.

That’s it for today.  I hope you enjoy your day.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful.

Happy Tuesday!!

Something a little more tame today.  Mainly shapes, colors, and patterns.  When I go to the farmer’s market I’m not looking for things to buy or people to visit with.  I’m there for one purpose, to capture the experience with images.  I love to photograph people but many times I just can’t find a location that will let me do that without drawing attention to myself.  I’m not out to ruin anyone’s day I just love making images of people doing their thing.

September-27-2014-2C

So I generally photograph objects for their interesting colors or shapes or the patterns of their arrangement.  It’s common for Jeanne to be a half block down the street before she realizes that I’m still back where we were photographing a basket of fruit.  🙂

I also enjoy watching the people interact with the vendors.  Many have developed friendships over the years from selling and buying food and it is evident from the banter back and forth between them.

September-27-2014-2D

There are always craft items there as well and sometimes I like to take images of them.  This week there was a young photographer showing her images and offering them for sale.  Most of what I saw of her work centered around commercial buildings from different perspectives than you would normally see them.  What I saw of her work was very good and it made me wish I had taken them.

I’m reading a book now on backyard bird photography.  It’s interesting to see how many of the things he talks about as his techniques for capturing images are things I’ve already stumbled upon.  He has given me lots of ideas that I’m thinking about trying if I can convince Jeanne to let me build a blind on our patio.  🙂

The chapter I’m on now talks about how additive shooting small birds can become and I have to agree with that.  I’ve let other parts of my photography slide because I have been preoccupied with the little feathered creatures.

September-27-2014-2B

I’ll leave you with this image of a bee on a sunflower.  Jeanne likes to buy a sunflower to teach a unit at school so she picked out four very nice flowers and was carrying them when I noticed this bee on one of them.

I tried to talk her into holding it still so I could photograph it but she wanted no part of that.  Thankfully Ben took the flowers from her and held them.

He said by the time we had made it three blocks there were more bees and several wasps that landed on the flowers.  We put them down and took the only one that didn’t have a bee on it.   🙂

That’s it for today.  I hope you have a great day.  Thanks for stopping by the blog and be careful.

Red-Tailed Hawk

Happy Monday!

CAUTION!!!!  If you are squeamish or do not like the reality of nature then please do not read any further or look at anymore images.  Just press the back button on your browser and check back tomorrow.

Yesterday morning as the soft morning light was making its way across our back yard I took my camera and morning beverage out to the patio to get an early start on my “bird feeder project.”  The temperature was cool.  Cool enough in fact that I lit the fire ring to provide some warmth.

After restocking the bird feeders I settled in one of the chairs and got the camera configured.  I waited for several minutes but uncharacteristically there were no birds at the feeder.  I looked at the trees in our back yard and there were 20 morning doves sitting on the branches.  There were lots of birds sitting in the other trees but none were coming close the feeders.

Then I glanced to the right and saw the big red-tailed hawk.  Ah ha, that’s the reason.  He was sitting in the big tree to the West of our home.  I couldn’t get an angle on him to grab an image and when I stood up he flew off.  Damn another missed opportunity.

I sat there for ten minutes and still no birds came.  I thought perhaps he is in one of the trees by the road so I venture around the side of the house and there he sat perched on School Zone sign.

September-28-2014-1A

I fired off a few shots and then he took off.  Well at least I got a couple of butt shots if nothing else.  As I was walking back to the patio I notice a little squirrel playing around the base of the tree near the street.  It never occurred to me that he was what the hawk was interested in, that is until the hawk came back, circled and then swooped down close to the ground.  So I grabbed my tripod and ran around the house to see what was going on.  Sure enough he had caught the unwary squirrel playing on the ground and he had swooped down and caught him.  I took about 30 images of him and the squirrel in their death struggle but I won’t show those images.

September-28-2014-1C

The hawk was frustrated with me so he half flew and half jumped about 15 feet away dragging his quarry with him.   I thought the squirrel is too heavy for him to fly with it.  I thought at one time about trying to scare the hawk away from his capture but then I reasoned that if he doesn’t eat he dies.  My friend and DNR Naturalist Ann has told me before you have to let nature do what nature does.

September-28-2014-1D

Just as I tried to get a better angle on the hawk he got airborne.  It was not an easy feat and I thought at one time he was going to hit the fence in our back yard but he and his prey just cleared it.  I assume he flew down to the little pond, which is also fenced in with lots of trees and that is where he probably claimed his meal.

I have to admit I was saddened and thought it must be the little squirrel that plays in our back yard and eats from the ground.  But happily about an hour later I saw him at the bird feeder eating away.  He may be the next meal or one of the several rabbits that live in our neighborhood.  The hawk has been around here for years and he continues to grow so he must be finding lots of food to eat.  Remember you can click on any of the images to view a larger size.

That’s for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

My Favorite Tree

Happy Sunday!

This is my favorite tree to photograph.  I actually was a little ahead of schedule Friday on my way to work and there were God beams coming through the clouds so I decided to go photograph my tree.  Fortunately I still made it to my meeting on time.

Friday was an exceptionally busy day with meetings and working on Federal reports that have to be out the door by the end of September.

September-26-2014-B

However at 11:00 a.m. one of my co-employees suggested we take time and walk across the street to see the Governor who was going to make a speech at the Decker Hotel.  I’ve met Governor Branstad before (well at least I’ve been in the same room as he was) and shook his hand but since I don’t get to personally meet many people of notoriety I thought it was worth while to go see him.

Besides compared to where the state was when he took office and where it is today I’d have to say he has done a very good job.

September-26-2014-C

Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds was also at the speech and I had never met her before.  She is a good public speaker and I always enjoy listening to someone who has a good presentation.

So I got my political shot for the day and then it was back to meetings and paperwork.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoy your Sunday and as always thank you for stopping by the blog.  I appreciate your support.  Be careful.

A deer in the wild

Happy Friday!!

I was going though my images from earlier in the week and found this image of the deer I saw.  It was relatively  sharp and since I happen to think they are a beautiful creature (except at night on or along the side of the road) I decided to show this image to you.  I love how they just freeze and perk their ears straight up moving them from side to side like a radar.

On the way home last night I took some detours looking for harvest images.  I saw four of five images I would like to have captured but the road was narrow (nowhere to park) and or there was too much traffic.  I don’t like hiking a half mile in a suit so I just passed them up.  This weekend should provide more opportunities.

I’ve been in the people business for over 25 years and I am constantly amazed, befuddled, and sometimes overwhelmed by the complexity of human inter action.  Yesterday was spent in training and trying to solve a variety of crises during the breaks.  I had two different groups for the training.  The group in the morning showed up without pen or paper.   The second group in the afternoon showed up with pen, paper and a readiness to participate fully in the discussion.  Amazing!

Mark stopped by for a couple of hours last evening.  He was in town to attend the wake of Taylor’s Grandmother.  Even though we didn’t spend much time together it is always great to see him.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you have a wonderful Friday and be careful.

Fall Farm Scene

Happy Thursday!

A quick post today.  I was on my way to Monticello to do some training yesterday afternoon and drove by this farm scene.  Nothing special going on with it but for some reason I found it interesting and so I did my normal bat-turn and came back to the area.  After capturing this scene I was walking back to my car and across the road was a young doe feeding.

I grabbed some quick shots of her but I was using the 80 – 400 mm lens racked out at 400 mm focal length so the fastest shutter speed I could get was only 1/160 sec.  Not fast enough to overcome camera shake and her nervous movements.

That’s all I have for you today.

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

A lowly Sparrow

Happy Hump Day!

It has been a busy couple of days to start this week off.  I have not had time for photography or blogging.

I captured this image last evening at the bird feeder line.  Yes it’s just a lowly sparrow but he sat and posed for me a long time.  Usually they will fly off after about the third or fourth shutter click.  I got the feeling he enjoyed it because he would turn his head from side to side and hold the pose.  🙂

I spent the day conducting training yesterday.  Every time I teach a course I have a renewed respect for the work that Jeanne does on a daily basis.

I am so excited by the subject that I’m trying to teach yet many times I can see from the faces and body language of my audience that they are either not getting it or they are not sharing in my exuberance and that is my responsibility.  It is especially hard to teach a subject after lunch when the room is dark for a video and the food is draining the individual of energy.  Some might say it is because the presenter is boring and they may have a point.

On the way home yesterday I looked for some harvest pictures.  I went by miles of fields but still no machinery harvesting the crops.  I have training this evening so it will be dark on my drive home.  Perhaps in the next couple of days I’ll be able to make some harvest images.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

September-19-2014

Happy Sunday!

On my way home Friday evening I saw this lone Heron standing in the middle of the duck pond fishing.  The sun was coming directly towards me so the Heron is back lite, hence the silhouette.

I liked the soft colors of the evening light on the pond so I had to stop and grab some images.  I changed my camera settings several times but this is the one I felt like was a keeper.

I didn’t get much accomplished yesterday.  I was working on some photos around 8:00 a.m. when there was a brief power outage.  It only lasted 15 seconds but that was long enough to make all the clocks blink.  It also took the internet down, which I thought would be temporary.  I gave it 30 minutes but it never came back up.

I made 5 calls to Mediacom over the next 4 hours speaking to 5 different technicians all with a different takes on what was wrong.  One said it was my modem, one said it was my router, one said it was my connections were bad in the house because we had too many splitters, none of them said it was their problem.  So I bought a new modem and of course that didn’t solve the problem.  I called back a 6th time and this time I got a recorded message saying there was an outage in our area and due to heavy call volume I should call back again.  Sigh!

Thank you Melinda and Kathy for your gracious comments.  Don’t worry I’ll keep capturing images of our little feathered friends.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Enjoy your day and thanks for stopping by the blog.  Be careful.

Happy Friday!

I think you’ll have to admit I haven’t shown any birds for sometime now so that is what I have for you today.  It seems like forever since I was able to sit out on the patio and capture images of our little feathered friends.  Of course I wasn’t able to do that until after thoroughly cleaning all the bird poop off the patio first.  They are filthy creatures to be sure.  They even poop in their own water.  🙂

September-18-2014-A

I had an appointment with my eye doctor yesterday to follow-up on the fogginess in my eye.  They took an x-ray of my retina, which was amazing to me.  I actually got to see the x-ray after the process.

They wanted to be sure there wasn’t anything going on there.  The good news is that I have healthy eyes that have not been affected by the diabetes.  However I do have a cataract that needs to be removed so I see the ophthalmologist in a couple of weeks to get that taken care of.

I got home from the clinic around 5:00 p.m. so Jeanne and I went for a nice walk before dinner.  Now that the days are getting shorter it gets harder to get the walks in as I usually do not get home until 6:30 p.m. or later.  So I have to use the treadmill, which is not as enjoyable as walking with my bride.  🙂

September-18-2014-B

I had to say good-bye to a friend yesterday.  She is one of those people who just makes the world brighter with her smile and personality.  She is such an outgoing friendly person and I will truly miss seeing her on a regular basis.  On the other hand I’m happy for her as she is opening her own business in Maquoketa and I wish her every success.  So good luck Amy and I hope your dreams come true.

That’s it for today.  Thank you for tolerating the birds.  I won’t show anymore unless I’m desperate.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by the blog.  I hope you enjoy your Friday and as always please be careful.
