Happy Monday!

I have three images for you today.  Jeanne and I went on a photo run yesterday evening and I didn’t find what I was looking for.  We were losing daylight rapidly so I decided to make some images of the sunset.  It wasn’t a spectacular sunset, however any sunset is beautiful in its own right.

I was standing on the edge of a field trying to capture this tree as my main subject with the light and clouds to give it definition. Some young men came by in a pickup truck, stopped and then yelled “Weird” and then drove off at a high rate of speed.  I get that a lot.  🙂

september-18-2016-a

I was asked the other day by a friend why I usually say how many images I have at the beginning of each post.  I do that for my Facebook Friends as if they think I only have one image they are inclined to no click on the link that goes to my blog so they miss some of the mindless dribble I put forth and some additional images.

september-18-2016-b

I did all my tasks over the weekend so today my only goal is to see if I can capture a decent image of a butterfly.  If not I’ll see what else my camera can find.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Remember you can click on each image to reveal a larger more detailed version of the image.

Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Saturday!

I have several images for you today.  Yesterday I drove to Maquoketa to have lunch with a Friend that I haven’t seen in some time.  After lunch and on my way out-of-town I stopped by the “duck pond” because I saw a Great White Egret sitting at the marsh and I cannot pass up a chance to photograph them.  It was a beautiful day with a nice breeze (very windy at times) and low humidity.

Since I didn’t have a suit on I decided to explore the wild prairie grass area and look for butterflies.  I am pleased with the image above and some of the other images I was able to capture.

september-16-2016-a

I rarely can pass up wild flowers.  It was difficult to capture images of anything that was nailed down because the breeze was blowing things around pretty good and it was difficult for the camera to lock on focus.

september-16-2016-c

This Common Buckeye for example is a little softer than I like, because he was on some flowers that were really being tossed around by the wind.  My lens would drop focus and then reacquire it.  I have my camera set up so that if it does not focus I cannot take the shot.  I don’t want a bunch of completely blurry images but even on this setting there are some less than sharp images that get taken.

september-16-2016-b

This was the last image I captured.  As I was walking deeper into the grass area I saw the unmistakable movement of a snake slithering into the tall grass.  Probably just a small Garter snake but a snake non the less.  I’m the first to admit that I have a snake phobia (i.e. an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Common phobias are a snake phobia.)  So yes my friends can tell me all they want to that there is nothing to be fearful of, but a phobia is a phobia and I’ve had it all my life.  😦

So it was a hasty retreat to the car and back to Dubuque.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Thursday!

I got to photograph this little cutie yesterday afternoon, after work.  Her parents work at the local Mexican restaurant in Maquoketa and I have gotten to know her Mother, Lettie who is a very hard-working and excellent food server.  Anyway to make a long story short I photographed Lettie’s son a couple of years ago (she had never had a portrait of him) and then she had this little pumpkin about 7 months ago so I told her I would photograph her when the opportunity worked out.

september-14-2016-b

Her son remembered our photo session, which like this one was held at Little Bear Park.  The light was dappled so I used a reflector to provide more even light on them.  I had to hand hold the reflector and the camera so I didn’t get the best angle on them.  I needed an assistant.  🙂

Anyway it was a fun session and I’ll make a couple of prints for the family of the kids.

september-14-2016

After dinner last evening I went outside to contemplate the events of the day.  I saw this guy in the sky.  I’ve shot the moon (no pun intended) hundreds of times but can’t resist photographing a full moon.  I took this image with the Nikon D500 | Nikon 200 – 500 mm lens | ISO 100 1/500 sec @ f8.

That’s it for today.  Thank you for checking out the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Wednesday!

Just one image for you today that I took a couple of weeks ago while visiting the Lock and Dam in Dubuque.  First time out with the new Nikon D500 and I was just making some shots of the river traffic.

Nothing else on my mind today so I’ll thank you for stopping by the blog.

Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Tuesday!

I have four images for you today from the Sunday 9/11 fly in breakfast held at the Dubuque Regional Airport.  Photographing static airplanes displays (or a parade) always offers some significant challenges if you are trying to make a quality image.  You can click on any image to make it larger and reveal more detail.

First problem is the event is usually held in the worst light of the day.  The light is very harsh and produces specular highlights and clearly defined shadows.  Then there are the people.  They are everywhere milling around the display and in the background.  So the challenge is to make an image with no people in the shot or at minimum keep them “minimized.”

september-11-2016-bb

This was the only war bird left at the airport when we arrived.  I’ve photographed it before but never get tired of looking at it and photographing it.  While I was trying to photograph it some little kids were actually climbing up on the wing while their parents just watched.  I suggested to them they probably should not be doing that and I got the hate stare.

september-11-2016-cc

The only other plane of interest was this biplane.  It had a beautiful paint job and was in pristine condition.  Other than the required electronics the instrument panel was pretty authentic with only the basic necessary flight instrumentation.

september-11-2016-dd

So yesterday evening I got the last of my four programs ( and plug-ins) working on my iMac.  A lot of software companies put limitations on the number of times you can install a piece of software.   Even though I had cloned the old drive onto the new SSD, some of my programs considered it a new install.  An email to them explaining the situation usually takes care of the problem.

The last program was one that I use the least and I got a stern warning from the technical guy that when I duplicate, replace, or do anything else to my hard drive on one computer I should deactivate the software first.  Who knew.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Rainy and stormy this morning in my world and that makes for an interesting time.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Monday!

Fun day yesterday.  Jeanne and I along with Angie, Ben, and the grand kids attended the annual fly in breakfast at Dubuque Regional Airport.  We didn’t get there until 10:00 a.m. so some of the older war birds had already departed.  Still it was fun to see the kids. Their eyes get so big when they see the airplanes up close.  I took Gabby to sit in the Mercy helicopter.  She kept saying “Mercy helicopter” and I said no Gabby it’s the UI helicopter, (because it said University of Iowa on the side and several other places.)  We went back and forth about it and when we got back in line for breakfast I was telling Angie about our conversation about the helicopter.  She just looked at me and said, “Dad it is the Mercy helicopter.” We lease it from the University.  I apologized to Gabby.  🙂

september-11-2016-a

The first two images were taken at the breakfast table inside the hanger at the airport.  Lighting and background were terrible but the subjects were beautiful and perfect.

september-11-2016

Later in the day I played golf at Thunder Hills in the inaugural “Bob Rudzinski Memorial Golf Outing.”  A lot of his friends and golfing buddies showed up to play golf and then we had dinner to celebrate the memories of our departed friend.  His twin sons, Nick and Tim were there as well and after dinner we shared our favorite stories about our friend Bob.

The Butterfly?  I couldn’t get him to open his wings for me but I can’t pass up a chance to photograph a Monarch even if they don’t cooperate.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Posted in: Daily Posts. Tagged: iMac repair, Installing a new hard drive, Photography, Replacing hard drive with SSD.

september-09-2016-v

Reflective Sunday 9/11.

If you do not consider yourself geeky you may find this post boring and consider passing it.  There are five images but they are only to help tell the story and not of any real photographic significance from an artistic point of view.

I discussed sometime ago on this blog the deteriorating condition my 2013 iMac was in.  As an example it took over three minutes for Lightroom (a program I use every day) to load.  It took several more minutes before I could do anything in it. And many times it would freeze and display the spinning beach ball if I was doing something of any consequence.  In short the computer had become a huge pain to use and I was seriously considering buying a new one.

Unfortunately a new iMac would cost over $3,500 and I didn’t want to part with that much money.  So I started looking for alternatives.  I reasoned that perhaps it was a memory issue.  So I added 32 GB of memory up from the 8 GB it came with.  There was no perceptible difference in speed.  So the more research I did the more I was convinced that it was the hard drive that was the problem.  I found a company that specialized in selling not only SSD (solid state drives) but also the tools needed to install it.  The same company that I purchased the equipment for upgrading my old Macbook Pro with an SSD.  I felt like since I had been successful fixing that problem I could install a new SSD on my iMac.

september-09-2016-a

I watched the video of how to do it several times before finally deciding to go ahead with the project.  The cost of the new SSD and the tools needed to install the drive was $350.  In my mind it was worth the money to see if I could fix the problem and save the computer and a lot of additional money.  The one thing that was daunting was the warning from the company saying,  “This is a very difficult process and should be left to a professional.”

Okay that’s why I waited two months (watching the video several more times) before I decided to take on the project.  The hard drive was a 3.5 inch 1 Tb analog device and I was replacing it with a 2.5 inch solid state drive.  The SSD has no moving parts and it much faster than the older spinning disk.  First part of the process was easy.  Initialize the new SSD for a Mac configuration and then duplicate (clone) the new drive from the old drive.

I assumed that would take several hours as my Macbook Pro took almost 5 hours and it was only a 500 GB drive.  I was pleasantly surprised when after taking a nap I discovered the process was completed in under two hours.  🙂

september-09-2016-b

The next step and admittedly the most difficult step was to separate the front 27 inch screen from the body of the computer.  It is held in place by adhesive tape and it is a long difficult process to separate it from the computer.  You can see some of the tools needed to accomplish this. So the first step is to gently insert a special tool that is designed to give you a separation space so that you can insert the (guitar pick) object that you have to work around the entire screen trying to pry it free from the adhesive.  My first attempt to insert the pry tool resulted in the screen cracking.

september-09-2016-d

Now what do I do?  Well it was a crack that was low on the screen and would not show so I continued.  A little further up and another crack appeared.  Damn, now what?  So I stopped and thought about it for awhile.  I reasoned that there was always the possibility that this would not work and I would have to trash the iMac.  So I moved on as carefully as I could.  I finally (90 minutes later) got the screen separated and ready to remove with no more cracks.

It was after I got the screen off that I forgot to continue taking images to document the process.  😦

But removing the old drive and installing the new SSD turned out to be a  breeze.  In no time at all I was ready to put the machine back together.  That was another challenge in itself.  I had to install new strips of adhesive, which with my big fingers proved to be a real struggle.  Finally I got it all back together and cleaned up.

Back on my desk I turned it on and nothing but a black edge of screen light.  I waited and waited but nothing happened.  Now what.  If I take the screen off again it is bound to break up and I don’t have anymore adhesive and what the hell do I do anyway?

september-09-2016

So I rebooted in safe mode and after about 180 seconds I got a globe spinning and a statement saying that It was configuring.  Yea!!!!!!

After that I rebooted and it worked perfectly.  Very, very fast and a pleasure to work with again.  You can see in the lower right corner the cracks in the screen, which do not interfere with my work.  There is one small crack that comes onto the viewing area of the screen about three inches up and I have to really look for it.  So I am very happy with the results.

I have essentially a new computer for $350 a savings of $3,150.00 🙂

That’s it for today.  If you finished the whole story then you can consider yourself geeky.

Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Friday!

I have three images for you today.  Found this guy at the Duck Pond on the way home yesterday evening.  I stayed a little later than normal yesterday trying to clean up some things for the weekend and when I left the sun was a beautiful soft yellow color that drew me to one of my favorite places.

I was a little skeptical about finding anything because for the last few weeks there hasn’t been much activity at the marsh so I was delighted to see this Blue Heron fishing.

september-08-2016-a

He was not thrilled that I was there but at least he didn’t fly away as I approached and got into a position that I could capture some images.

september-08-2016-b

I know this is a butt shot.  Actually it is the South end of a North bound duck.  He was not as tolerant as the Heron and once I got a little too close for him he scampered away.  🙂

Tough day yesterday and I’m glad it is the weekend (at least for me.)

That’s it for today.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Monday & Happy Labor Day!

I have a variety of family “snap shots”  for you today from last evening when we had dinner at Angie and Ben’s home.  Warning there are some really messy looking kids in the following images so proceed at your own risk.  🙂

It was a real treat that Mark got to come home for the weekend.  He and Taylor came over for dinner.   Grilled burgers with Fincel Sweetcorn, baked beans, and fruit.  Can’t beat that for a Labor Day feast!

September-04-2016

My flash hadn’t cycled in time for me to capture this image so it’s a little dark but I love this look.  I could have spent an hour with Photoshop and cleaned this up but I love it this way.

September-04-2016-A

There aren’t enough hours in the day to fix this image so what you see is what you get.  🙂

Click on the image to see all the details of this mess.

To say that Austin attacks his food with a vengeance is an understatement.  Ben took him straight from the high chair to the bath tub.  He appeared sometime later all fresh and clean.

September-04-2016-C

We were all sitting out on the deck enjoying the wonderful evening and I didn’t see Josh.  I went looking for him. Ever the studious young man he was doing some research about something.

It was a great evening spent with family and it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your holiday and be careful.

September-02-2016

Happy Saturday!

I have four images for you today and a different kind of a story.  By the way I call this image my three for one.  🙂

I had a unique experience yesterday.  I was actually asked to “get off this property!”

That has never happened to me, ever.  So I was out running errands yesterday afternoon and I happened to be driving by a backwater area of the Mississippi.  Through the trees I caught a glimpse of some white birds and since I had my camera with me I was more than anxious to grab some images.

September-02-2016-A

It took me about 20 minutes to find a way off the highway and down to the area where the birds were.  As I approached the area I saw there was a business sitting off to my right with a clearly defined roadway and what I perceived to be an equally well-defined property line.  So I stayed well to the left of the business and parked in an area that I thought was okay.

September-02-2016-B

There were a lot of geese around the area and I walked very slow so as not to excite them or traumatize them.  I mean I have photographed thousands of geese before and not one them has ever complained.  What I was obviously interested in was this Great Egret.  I got as close as I thought I could so as not to spook him.  I got off about 20 shots when I heard someone yelling something.

September-02-2016-C

Some lady was yelling at me that I was scaring the geese away and once they were gone they wouldn’t come back (which is not true) and that I was on private property and I needed to get out.  I apologized several times to her and left.  😦

It is never my intention to spoil or interrupt anyone’s day for sure.  So I left the area and will not return to that place again.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.
