Happy Friday!

I have some random wildlife images for you today and none of them are eagles.  🙂

Busy work week didn’t leave anytime for photography.  I hope to correct that today as I get out and see what there is to make images of.

March-11-2016-03-06-16-B

I made these images last Monday at Mud Lake Park, North of Dubuque.  I saw this little squirrel scurrying about but didn’t realize he had a nut in his mouth until I got the second image of him when he climbed a tree.  The first shot is of him playing hide and seek with me, hoping that I had gone away.  🙂

“Any port in a storm.” Gulls rest and sleep on a thin piece of ice floating in the back waters of the Mississippi.

I can never pass up a chance to photograph Mallard Ducks.  They are such a vibrant, beautiful, and colorful bird.

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoy your day and as always be careful.

Happy Thursday!

I have three new eagle images for you today.  So if you’re sick of eagles then you can just click the back button on your browser and move on.  I have to say this is absolutely the best year I have had photographing eagles and I’m very happy with many of the images.  I was talking to my good friend Pat yesterday afternoon and he said that I should make prints of my favorite eagle images and offer them for sale.  That thought intrigued me but actually my passion for photography is for my pleasure and not (at this time anyway) to make money with it.

March-10-2016-03-06-16-A

Anyway I appreciate Pat’s suggestion and I know he has my best interest at heart, but I’ll have to give some thought to that idea.

I had a 12 hour day yesterday with employee benefit meetings and another long one today.  I don’t really mind because I get to see a lot of my friends that I normally do not get to see.  So it is a treat for me to travel to our different locations and present some of our benefits plans to our staff.

March-10-2016-03-06-16-B

I had such a great time at the Bee Branch Canal Sunday.  Never would I have imagined I could get such quality eagle shots in such a confined place.  It was a lot of fun.

That’s it for today.  I hope you enjoy your day and be careful.

Remember  you can click on the images to make them larger.  Sometimes that helps see all the wonderful detail of the eagles.

Happy Wednesday!

I have 5 images for you today and not one of them is of an eagle. 🙂

This image of a blue heron was taken on Saturday at the 16th Street Basin.  I was able to get pretty close to this guy before he decided to fly away.  Normally herons are pretty skittish but for some reason he didn’t seem to mind me until I crossed that magic line and then he was gone.

March-09-2016-03-06-16-B

There was a lot of activity at the Bee Branch Canal and these geese added to the population.  My friend Andreas is always talking about capturing the gesture that a creature makes and so I like to show you this image of the male goose asserting his manhood and saying “here I am baby.”  🙂

March-09-2016-03-06-16-C

These little gulls are pretty adept at catching fish.  Their only problem is hanging on to the fish long enough to get a meal out of it.  Like I showed in the blog yesterday it didn’t take long for a big eagle to swoop down and grab this fish from the frightened gull trying to get out of the way of the eagle.

March-09-2016-03-06-16-A

On the banks of the canal these common black birds were hunting for food as well.  We see them all the time and really don’t pay much attention to them but they are a wonderful bird none the less.

March-09-2016-03-06-16-D

My friend Andreas has been watching an owl at the Mud Lake Park for a few years and has documented several off spring of the owl.  I have never been able to get a glimpse of it let alone a photograph.  So Sunday I had my lucky day and caught this image of the owl keeping watch over the area while she sits on her egg.  Exciting.

That’s it for today.  Thank you as always for following my blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Tuesday!

Several images for you today that will tell the story of what happened at the 16th Street Basin on Saturday.  The Ring-billed gulls are very adept at catching fish.  They are not very good at keeping them or eating them.  The eagles on the other hand are really good at stealing fish from the gulls and generally what I see is that the gulls tend to get what the eagles finally discard.

In the above image the little gull has caught a fish and I have several shots of it dragging the fish onto the ice.  It’s quite a chore for the gull as the fish is probably too large for him to eat because of all the competition from the other gulls but more important because there are eagles watching his every move.

March-08-2016-03-05-16-B

Silly little gull now seems to be announcing to the world that he has caught a fish and he is proud of his effort.  Once I saw the fish on the ice I disregarded the gull and kept my lens focused on the fish because from experience I knew what was coming next.

March-08-2016-03-05-16-C

All of a sudden the little gull took to the air and in the blink of an eye the eagle swooped down from his perch and grabbed the little gull’s fish and was off.  I have watched this scenario time and time again.  The gulls do the work and the eagles get the prize. 🙂

I know that this is a butt shot but what I like about it is the fact that you can still see the eagle’s eye and his catch of the day.

March-08-2016-03-05-16-D

On his way with his lunch firmly ensconced in his mighty talons the eagle departs the scene to enjoy his meal.  What of the little gull?  He returned to the scene as if looking for his catch but it was gone.  So he would have to fish some more and hopefully still get something for his effort.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

March-06-2016

Happy Monday!

What a great weekend I had from a photography standpoint.  Well, okay the rest was pretty good too.  Saturday Jeanne wanted to go to the 16th Street Basin and see if there were any eagles there.  We waited for the sun to break out of the clouds, which never happened, so around 3:30 p.m. we decided to just go and see what we could find.  There wasn’t much going on when we first arrived and in fact we were ready to leave when some of the eagles started fishing and then it got very interesting.  More on that for another post.

Over the weekend I photographed eagles, blue herons, geese, ducks, canvasbacks, hooded merganser, common merganser, gulls, an owl, a squirrel, and various other small birds.  I made over 2,500 images in the two days.  The 3 images I have for you today were all taken yesterday at the Bee Branch Canal, which is an interesting story in itself.

The sun was out yesterday morning so I decided to see if I could get some better eagle images at the Basin.  I was surprised to see the ice was completely gone, since there was still a fair amount of ice on Saturday.  There were a few eagles in the trees but no action when I arrived.  When I went to my favorite spot I saw two guys standing there with big lens and tripods.  They appeared to be annoyed that I stopped with my car to visit with them.  So not seeing any action and feeling a little hostility I decided to see what else was going on.  I went to the river and found a couple of eagles perched in the trees overlooking the dam but I’ve got thousands of images of eagle images sitting in trees so I moved on.

March-06-2016-A

I thought I would try the other side of the Basin thinking I could get some images of eagles flying, but that didn’t offer a very good view and the eagles were too far away.  As I was walking back to my car I noticed a large number of gulls flying around the Bee Branch Canal.  I reasoned there might be some eagles there as they like to let the gulls do the work and then they grab the fish.

I parked the car, grabbed my camera and tripod and walked a few hundred feet through the tall weeds and grass and found 6 eagles perched on a tall mound of dirt.  What happened next was two hours of fun photographing eagles and gulls working in tandem to feed the eagles.  🙂

The gulls would dive in the water and come up with a fish which was usually too large for them to carry.  They would drop the fish (which was stunned) and no more than the fish had hit the water there was an eagle there to grab it and leave with his prize.  I saw this happen 6 times while I was there.  I wasn’t able to catch-all the action but I got some of it.

March-06-2016-B

The Canal offered a lot of shooting challenges.  There are tons of objects for your camera’s auto focus to pick up on and many times I ended up with a brown blob because the focus was on the scenery.  I decided to shoot in crop sensor mode, which accounts for the framing of some of my images.  In the view finder they were centered but camera crops them for a smaller sensor size so I didn’t always have a good composition.

I finally got tired of standing after a couple of hours and there were no eagles fishing anymore so I packed it in and decided to go up to Mud Lake to see what I could find.  More on that in a later post.  Remember you can click on the images to show a larger image.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful!

Happy Saturday!

Just one image for you today.  This eagle capture was made last Saturday when Andreas and I were in Sabula.  We were leaving the area and I was following Andreas (who was a fair distance ahead of me) when this guy landed in a tree next to the water just ahead of me.  I slowly moved my car forward and when I got pretty close I leaned out the door with one foot on the break and ripped off a burst before he flew away.

I did not realize until this morning in processing the image (click on the image to make it larger) that he has an identification band on his right leg.  I would have preferred if that one branch was not there but it would have taken a lot of work to Photoshop it out of the image and then I’m not sure how good it would have looked.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for checking out the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Thursday!

Back from Ames and the end of life celebration for Jeanne’s Mother.  It is always a difficult time mixed with fond remembrances, emotional good-byes, and the closeness of family and friends.  Our Grandchildren were a source of joy and comfort and their energy knew no bounds.

February-29-2016-A

Austin has learned to crawl so we cannot just lay him down and know that he will stay there.  He has really perfected the crawling thing in the last couple of weeks. 🙂

Some dear friends from Dubuque, Al and Sue, drove over from Dubuque to Ames to be with Jeanne.  They did that when her Father passed as well.  Amazing.

February-29-2016-B

Yes I always have a camera with me.  I don’t always use it but there were moments I wanted to capture at the visitation that will be looked upon in later years with some good memories.

Mark and Taylor were at the visitation as well.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Monday!

Saturday I traveled to Green Island Wildlife Reserve to meet my friend Andreas Exner.  I had not been to Green Island for many months so I was anxious to see what had changed since the last time I was there.  I also was hoping for some migrating wildlife to photograph.  After visiting with Andreas for a while he said he didn’t expect there to be any migrating wildlife this day and he was correct.

The little guy above was in our back yard carrying grass with his brother to their nest.  I captured this image before heading to Green Island.  I was lucky to catch him in this “flying” position. 🙂

February-27-2016-C

These are not great eagle shots.  The eagles were pretty far away on the ice so I had to crop the images so you could see them better.  Since I rarely print my images I do not mind cropping from time to time.  I know many photographers consider cropping a sin, but I’m all about getting the best image I can and if that means cropping so be it.

February-27-2016-B

I like this series of images because for me capturing the eagle making the catch is the sweet spot.  Even though we were pretty far away from the eagles my heart rate always accelerates when I’m anywhere near eagles. 🙂

February-27-2016-D

We didn’t find anything at Green Island so Andreas suggested we drive further south to Sabula.  There is a wonderful lake at Sabula and usually this time of year there are lots of eagles on the ice and in the trees.  As we traveled across the bridge there were probably 20 -30 eagles sitting on the ice but nowhere to park or no way to get close to them.  So we continued to the park area where there was a better photo opportunity albeit fewer eagles.

February-27-2016-E

I’ll leave you with this image of some ring-billed gulls enjoying the sun, sleeping and grooming.  It was a nice day and certainly fun to shoot with Andreas again.  We share the same passion for photography.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Saturday!

Yes today is really Saturday.  I don’t know what I was thinking yesterday when I wished everyone a happy Saturday but thanks to some dear friends I finally caught on and changed the date.  🙂

I have some images from a couple of weeks ago that I wanted to show today.  These were taken a little over a week ago so it is a reminder that we are not probably completely through with winter yet.

February-27-2016-02-15-2016

I love this old patrol car.  I have photographed it several times but never in the winter.  I would think it could probably tell a few stories.

February-27-2016-02-15-2016-B

I remember how cold it was the day I made these images.  Supposed to be in the mid 50s today with sunshine.  Shame on me if I don’t get out and take advantage of it.

February-27-2016-01-29-2016-A

Sorry but I have another eagle image to show you.  I have over 1,400 images that you haven’t seen so I was hoping you could tolerate one more.

Angel Number 2

On a personal note, Jeanne’s Mother passed away early this morning.  Please keep Jeanne in your prayers.  I am thankful that she is in a better place now and no more suffering.

Be careful.

Happy Friday!

I was lucky enough to capture this image of what I think is a Rough-Legged Hawk.  Honestly I’m not very good at identifying species but I did look for a long time and it seemed to me that he is either a Rough-Legged Hawk or a Broad-winged Hawk.  Fortunately for me, I have friends who are very good at bird identification.  🙂

That’s all I have for today.

Enjoy your day and be careful.
