Happy Saturday!  ~  230

Joshua, who is a little over 3 and a half years old, wanted Grandma and Grandpa to come see him jump off the diving board at the pool.  So after spending half a day working on getting some necessary work done for my company, we headed over to the pool around 5:00 p.m.

I didn’t have a very good day health wise yesterday.  I was feeling weak and unsteady.  I took a long nap in the afternoon and felt a little better.  Two things that have made themselves known as a result of my disease, is the fact that when my body needs food it tells me in no uncertain terms.  My right eye is very blurry and “foggy.”  Annoying but according to the research we did, it is a temporary occurrence until my levels equal out.

Okay, enough about that.  This was my first time at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club in many years.  They use to have just a typical rectangle pool and a kiddie pool.  Now it is like a water park with all kinds of toys for both children and adult to enjoy the water with.  Lots of sunbathing room and even dinning by the pool.  I was very impressed.

August-01-2014-A

So first Josh showed us his jumping ability (the first image), it wasn’t long before he tried a dive (above), now he may not be ready for the Olympic diving team but this isn’t bad form. 🙂

August-01-2014-B

Unfortunately on his second dive he is coming in for a pancake landing.  The image with Angie’s head eerily in the lower right is not technically good frame management but you can see by her gritting her teeth that she knows it’s going to hurt.

August-01-2014-C

The splash tells the story, lots of water and obviously not a clean entry into the water.  🙂

We had a lot of fun in the few minutes we were at the pool.  I ripped off 500 shots with the D4, which in such an amazing camera and still manages to impress me every time I use it.

It wasn’t long though before my need for food outweighed my need to photograph Josh.

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoy your Saturday.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful.

Happy Friday  ~  231

Actually yesterday was Friday for me as I am on an 8 day vacation (staycation) and do not return to work until next Friday.  🙂

These last few days have been amazing.  First and foremost is the love and support of my family, especially my best friend and soul mate Jeanne.  She has always been there to support and cheer me on even when she probably knew that I shouldn’t be doing that.  She has always believed in me and I honestly thank God every single day for her.

Next my dear friends some of whom I’ve known most of my life and thanks to Facebook I have been able to reconnect to them.  What a joy that has been these last couple of years to reconnect with the people who really truly know me “warts” and all and still call me friend.  I am truly blessed.

One of my lifelong dear friends, Melinda wrote me an email and I won’t share the whole email but there is one sentence that I found salient.

“When I think how many people read your blog, I can’t help but think you may help others along the way. Still, this isn’t easy, I know, but many of us will be keeping you in our prayers & wishing you well! You can do this, my friend!”

I have to tell you that meant a lot to me and as the day wore on yesterday I felt compelled to express my feelings about this challenge I am facing.  I truly do look at it as a blessing.  I was 65 pounds over weight, low on energy, self-esteem, tired all the time, and the worst thing was I didn’t have a clear vision of the future, at least not a positive one.

Then last Friday the voice on the other end of the phone said, “You have diabetes.”  There was no empathy in her voice, no concern, no emotion what-so-ever.  Not her fault, she probably has to deliver messages like that several times a day.  But when she hung up her voice reverberated in my mind.    I got up and closed the door to my office and sat there looking at the two pictures I have on my desk of Angie and Mark.  They are the greatest gift God could give me.  Then I started thinking about what this meant.  I could only at first see the negatives.  Crap, no wine, no drinks, no pasta, no bread, what the hell, all the things I like are now off limit.   What’s the point?

July-31-2014-B

A little time passed and then I started (thankfully) thinking rationally again.  There is a story and I probably won’t get it right but it goes something like this.  If you put a frog in a skillet and slowly increase the temperature under the skillet the frog will eventually die from the heat.  I was headed on a path of self-destruction.  I had been on diets so many times in my life and lost so much weight before only to put it right back on.  I think I actually figured that I had lost (conservatively) over 800 pounds over my adult life.  I have also gained over 800 pounds over my adult life.  I had become cynical thinking, I now weigh exactly what I did when I graduated high school almost to the pound.   So what’s the point of losing weight again and exercising.

Little by little it sneaks up on you and you actually begin to accept where you are in life.  Like the commercial says “A body at rest tends to stay at rest and a body in motion tends to stay in motion.  I had become so accustomed to carrying around all that weight and being tired all the time and having zero energy that it actually became the norm.  I ate what ever I wanted and sat in a chair all day and most of the evening and my weight didn’t vary more than + or – 5 pounds.  That became the heat that I could tolerate and I didn’t realize the heat was continuing to go up.

One of the “great” benefits of the disease was that I lost 30 pounds over a period of several months.  I was unaware of it because I had adopted the mindset of not weighing myself.  I noticed at first my watch band was lose and then I finally got to the last hole in my belt buckle.  Okay, now it’s time to weigh myself.   That is when Jeanne, Angie, and Ben said, call your doctor.  🙂

Well now I have no choice but to start eating good and to exercise.  That is the mindset that I left the office with Friday.  Sunday I started taking the medication and Jeanne and I both changed our eating habits.  I slept most of Sunday and most of Monday (I took a sick day.)  Tuesday I woke up feeling okay but a little wobbly.  As the day wore on and I became more engaged in my work I started feeling good.  I haven’t felt good in recent memory.  In fact the longer the day went the better I felt.

Wednesday was absolutely amazing.  I cannot honestly remember feeling as good as I did Wednesday.    Yesterday, the same thing.  I cut the grass, did a bike ride (yes I finally got the bike out of the storage room and up to the garage.  I only got 5 miles in and some of the little hills I use to take without even touching the gears I struggled with but I did remembered how much I love riding a bike.  🙂

July-31-2014-C

So all of this rambling comes down to a couple of things.  I have been faced with a challenge.  How I deal with it will determine the outcome, not the challenge itself.  It is the principle of the 90 / 10.  10% of what life deals us we have no control over, it’s the other 90% including our attitude that will determine the outcome.

I will be better off in the long run because of this disease than I would have been without it.

Thanks for listening.  From time to time I will talk about the events of living with diabetes but I assure you it will not dominate this blog. My blog is predominately about two things.  My PASSION for photography and what ever is on my mind at the time that happens to spill out.  That’s it.  🙂

Now about the images:  First one is of the Decker Hotel in Maquoketa.  Jeanne and I went there last night for dinner as part of our excursion plans for our stay at home vacation, (that and I had a couple of Phantom parts at the office that were delivered yesterday.)   🙂

The next image requires no comment other than to say that I shot this handheld in the Decker House at 24,000 ISO and I was amazed how little noise there really was.  That last image is of the sunset Jeanne and I saw on our way home. It was way more spectacular at one point but nowhere to pull over and photograph it.

Okay, that’s it for today.  Thank you for supporting the blog.  Enjoy this beautiful Friday and be careful.

Happy Hump Day  ~  233

Thank you all for the wonderful sentiments you shared with me yesterday.  I sometimes forget just how many wonderful friends I have who really care.  The good news is that the medication seems to be working.  I started off yesterday a little shaky but by midday I was feeling better than I have for a couple of months and that’s a big deal to me.

One of my long time dear friends  (Daryl) said to me yesterday something to the effect, “Love the bird images, I’ve never seen some of God’s creatures up close.”

There is a book I have read entitled “Purple Cow.”   The concept behind the book is that we become so familiar about cows in the field that we pay them no attention.  Put a purple cow in the field and it draws our attention, therefore you have to find things that make you and or your business standout from the crowd.

In the case of this image, it is a lowly sparrow.  A very common bird that we see hundreds of times each day.  They are the predominate bird at the sanctuary right now.  But if you click on the image to make it larger and just study this little guy for a couple of minutes you too will marvel at the complexity of one of God’s creatures.

That’s it for today.  I’m hoping for more improvement today.  I can’t tell you how good it feels to feel good.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by the blog (and yes I’m writing it today.)  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Tuesday  ~  234

This blog, over the last four years and one thousand plus posts has been good therapy for me.  It allows me to share the images that I love (be they technically good or not) and to ramble about things that are important to me or just fall out of my head.  You have been kind enough to read my blog on a more or less regular basis and for that I am both humbled and honored.

So I see no reason not to share my latest challenge with you as I have gotten many emails and comments about my health of late.  Friday morning I learned that I have type 2 diabetes.  Over the years I’ve been pre-diabetic  more than a few times and I would go on a diet, exercise, lose weight, and get it under control again.

Well this time I ignored the warning signs and it finally caught up to me.  I’ve done a lot of reading about it over the last few days.  It’s a nasty disease with many dangerous consequences if not managed properly.  The good news is that it can be managed and so I will.  Now begins a new chapter in my life.  Practically everything I like to eat is off-limits and all the things I’ve turned my nose up to over the years are now going to be my staple food source. 😦

July-28-2014

I wrote Monday’s blog on Sunday evening when I felt better than I had the entire day.  It’s always better if I can write the blog at the end of the day as opposed to trying to get one done before leaving for work.  So yes (in full disclosure) I am writing this blog Monday night for a Tuesday post.  I started the medication Sunday morning and it has some wicked side effects.  I couldn’t go to work Monday as I was foggy and very weak.  After a good lunch and a very healthy dinner I’m optimistic that I can make it to work Tuesday.  That’s the goal.   I want to say again, thank you all for your wonderful comments and get wells.  It means a lot.

July-28-2014-B

Now about today’s images.  We have this little squirrel who lives in one of the trees, at the back of our yard.  We rarely saw him that is until we set up the bird line and now he is a regular guest.  Usually if I’m sitting on the patio he will come no closer than the ground beneath the bird feeders where he makes a pretty good haul.

So I was surprised to see him come up on the patio, stand below the bird bath, and make the vertical leap to the top of the bath.  He drank a lot of water while I shot away with my camera.  Then in the wink of an eye he was gone.  He notice the new oriole feeder installed just today.  He’ll be in it before too long so I’m going to have to figure out something else for it perhaps a different location.

That’s all for tonight / today.  See it gets confusing.  Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Monday:  ~  235

Sorry, more birds.  I’m dealing with some health issues right now and just didn’t feel like getting outside to capture any other types of images.  Besides, I love sitting on the patio and watching the birds come and go.

This image and the last image will show you why I’m spending $70 every week on bird seed.  Sometimes there are as many as 40-50 birds around the feeding line, both on the feeders and on the ground eating the leftovers.

I’m not complaining, I get more from watching the birds than I’m giving.  🙂

July-27-2014-B

This is not a tack sharp image.  But I was lucky enough to capture this little guy just the instant before he took flight.

July-27-2014-A

Another one of the feeders with standing room only.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Friday  ~  238

Long week so I’m happy to see Friday come.  Hopefully I can catch up on the work that I’ve missed while training.  I hate being behind.

The Cardinal above is for my friend Ronnie.  He loves cardinals.  This guy and his spouse live across the yard at my neighbor’s tree.  He comes to the sanctuary a couple times a day and if I’m lucky one of those times is when I’m here with my camera.  His wife visits less often but occasionally I have captured images of them together.

July-24-2014-A

Every year around this time the “war birds” descend on Dubuque to practice for their performance given next week at the great Oshkosh Air Show.  There may be up to 20 of them before the show starts and their big radial engines can be heard all around Dubuque.

I always go to the airport and capture some images of them.  So last night on the way home I saw two of them flying near the airport and I had packed my 500 mm lens with me that day in case the opportunity presented itself.  So I stopped at the airport on my way home.

July-24-2014-B

The conditions were not my friend yesterday.  It was a gray day with some haze.  Because of wind direction they were taking off and landing on runway 18 /36, which is farthest runway from the observation area.  Normally they will take off on runway 13 / 27  so they are very close.

Also last evening they didn’t fly over the airport as they have in the past.  Looking back I have hundreds of these images in my files but I still like to shoot them.

That’s it for today.  Enjoy your day.  Thank you Kathy for your very thoughtful words, well spoken and true.

Be careful.

Happy Thursday  ~  239

I have birds for  you today.  There are at least two reasons for the bird images.  One, I love to watch them and capture their movements with my camera and they are about all I have been shooting for the last few days.  So I look for things that stand out to me and those are what I share with you today.

No exotic birds nor even “pretty birds,” just common everyday birds captured in unique poses (or at least I think they are.)

July-23-2014-2

Another full day of teaching today.  I believe so profoundly in what I’m teaching it is frustrating to me when I see others not embracing the subject and realizing how important it really is to their career and for that matter their life.  I have to take much of the responsibility because even though I have a passion for the subject I am not a charismatic, dynamic speaker and that is a huge part of making the material palatable.

July-23-2014-3

I was at a seminar last year at the SHRM conference in Des Moines.  I don’t even remember this morning what the topic was but it was something I wasn’t really interested in but it was the only session that wasn’t booked full of attendees.

I watched the speaker interact with the person who was going to introduce him and he was so detailed in his conversation with the other person about how to introduce him (I was sitting on the front row because it was the last seat available) that I thought to myself, I’m not going to enjoy his presentation.

Once he started talking he was so animated, funny, and inclusive that I found myself engaged with his every word.  <sigh>  Sucks when you have very little talent.

That’s it for today.  I’m off to engage myself with others.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day (each one is precious) and be careful.

Happy Hump Day  ~  240

I did training for 7 hours yesterday.  Each time I do training I have a greater appreciation for the work that Jeanne does.  The preparation for the training, the actual training (hoping all the time that what you’re teaching is being received) and then all the tear down and pack up afterward.  Jeanne does it every day during the school year.  Amazing!

When I did get back to the office the day’s work that I didn’t get done was waiting for me.  Also waiting for me was the RotorPixel gimbal for the Phantom Vision 2.  I ordered it last March 16th and it has taken this long to get it.

There is a start-up company in Great Britain who saw a need to build a gimbal for the Vision 2, which has a stationary camera on it.  The camera is great for still shots but not good for video because every movement the craft makes is visible on the video.  The gimbal eliminates that problem by making the camera independent of the craft.  I’ll post an image of it when I get it installed.

Anyway they have had their share of problems as any start-up company would have but they’ve slowly worked through them and now have a pretty good production system.  Problem is DJI (makers of the Phantom 2 Vision) released a new version of the Vision 2 a few weeks ago and called it the Vision 2+.  It has a new camera with a built-in 3 axis gimbal.  So it will be interesting to see what this company does because there are only a finite number of Vision 2 copters built and sold.

As for the image above.  I’m not sure what the attraction to this old tree was but they sure enjoyed standing on it.  I watched them for 30 minutes on the way home a couple of weeks ago and they never moved.  🙂

Several meetings today, which means some of the stuff I’m behind on is going to stay behind.  😦

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Tuesday!  ~  241

Long day yesterday and a short post today.  I am training all day today.  Sometimes a real challenge to keep it interesting enough to maintain their attention yet informative enough to impart knowledge.    Perhaps beyond my skill set but I will give it my best.

Jeanne and I went to her PEO group picnic last evening at Eagle Point Park.   Spouses were invited and the event was catered by Hy-Vee.  I’m not very good at making small talk and it was hot, so I was doubly uncomfortable.  There were some good friends there and I spent some time with a couple of them.  The food was good but the chicken had some seasoning on it that didn’t agree with me.

I did take my camera and shot a few images of the river, but the area of the picnic did not allow much in the way of photographic opportunities (at least to my eye.)  Got home around 8:45 p.m. much too late to capture an images for my bird feeder project, so another shot of an empty bird feeder.  😦

I took a shower because it was so hot at the park and called it a night.  90s today Ugh…

That’s it for today.  Sorry for the lack of images.  More tomorrow.  Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Monday  ~  242

I’m sorry for the lack of activity on the blog of late.  I’ve struggled with a bug and haven’t been feeling well.  Hopefully that is behind me and so I’m back at it today.

A couple of weeks ago Jeanne and I went down to the river (whenever I say that I always think of that stupid electric fish on a board that sings “Take me to the river, throw me in the water.”) to see how high the river was and to look at all the fish flies.   Just as we arrived this guy came by at an amazing pace.  He kept it up the entire time I could see him.  He must be in great shape.

By the way if you are familiar with the rubber fish that sings that you will now have that song in your head all day.  🙂

July-20-2014-07-12-14-B

Later we drove up the lock and dam 11 and found some pelicans fishing around the lock.  This pair was swimming along with their bills just above the water and sometimes just skimming the top of the water.

July-20-2014-07-12-14-C

I was just shooting on burst mode and was not expecting him stabbing at the water like that.  Generally when I’ve watched pelicans fish they do it in small groups and try to herd the fish into a pocket and then grab their fill.

Unfortunately this guy came up empty-handed.  I watched and photographed them for several hundred feet and each of them would stab at the water like this but each time they came up empty-handed.  While the pelicans fishing at the lock seemed to be having their share of luck.

July-20-2014-07-12-14-D

I’ll leave you with this image of a Robin just after his bath.  I couldn’t get set up quick enough to catch his antics in the bath as he bounded around and got his entire body covered in water.  But I like this image showing his indignation at me for taking his picture right after his bath.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Hope to get back on schedule now.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.

Enjoy your day and be careful.
