September-11-2015

Happy Sunday!

I shot some images last Friday when I played Thunderhills Country Club.  I haven’t played there for a couple of years and it was fun see the course again.  I joined Thunderhills in 1987 and was a member for 20 years.  They have made major improvements over the years and it is a spectacular golf course and club now.

Of course I took my camera with me and shot images on every hole.  This is the signature hole of the club the 16th hole, a par 5 with the approach shot over a large pond with a narrow green to land on.

As you can see from the image it was a perfect day.  Temperature was in the mid 60s with a moderate breeze to make it interesting.  Beautiful blue sky with big puffy clouds.  I don’t think I could have designed it any better.

September-11-2015-A

Mike my dear friend of many years asked me to be his guest this day and I played with him and his brother Rob who is from Des Moines, Iowa.  We were all pretty evenly matched skill wise so it was a fun morning of poor golf swings, cursing, insulting, and looking for lost balls.  🙂

Yes there is a windmill and even an old shed on the course.  You know I couldn’t pass up a chance to photograph a windmill and an old building.  They are both left over from the farm that was, before it became a golf course.  A group of golf enthusiasts each donated $500 and they borrowed the rest to purchase the land to build a golf course.  They were looking for something that was less expensive to play golf on then the Country Club but also not a public course.  It was for people who took their golf very seriously.

When I joined it cost $89 per month, which at the time was pretty steep for me.  But it was a wonderful time and I made a lot of great friends while a member.  In fact when I joined it was called “a working man’s country club.”

September-11-2015-C

My work, the escalating cost of membership, and rapidly deteriorating golf skills eventually prompted me to leave the club.  Now I only play in group charity events and occasionally an 18 hole round with friends.  Last year I think I only played 6 times the entire year and that’s about what I’ll get in this year.

These flowers were on t he 15th tee area.  Each tee area has an assortment of flowers and shrubs growing.  The golf course was in the best shape I can ever remember.  They built a beautiful huge club house a few years ago and so now Thunderhills is a true country club in every sense of the word.

September-11-2015-B

This is the final hole at Thunderhills.  A very long (for us that are skill challenged) and a difficult par 4.  That’s my ball on the left, which turned out to be a pretty good drive.  I managed to make a bogey but the drive was nice. 🙂

Amazing day finished off with some wine and a wonderful lunch at the clubhouse.  I can’t remember a day that I enjoyed more.

That’s it for today.  We’re heading out to the airport for the annual fly-in, drive-in breakfast.  I always like to photograph the airplanes that come in.  There are usually some pretty interesting experimental planes that fly in.

Thanks for stopping by the blog and enduring my rambling down memory lane.  I hope you enjoy your day and be careful.

September-10-2015

Solemn Greetings on this the 14th anniversary of 9/11.  Let us never forget the sacrifices made that day and since in our struggle against terrorism.  God Bless America!

Apparently I have a thing for windmills and dynamic or dramatic clouds.  🙂

I captured this image last evening on the way home.  I saw this amazing formation of clouds as soon as I got on the highway.  So I had to find something to put in from of them right, because usually just a cloud doesn’t make for the most interesting of images.

September-12-2012-C

Well on September 12, 2012 I shot the above image.  Notice any similarity?  I didn’t give it much thought until I was going through my images this morning (one of the ways I store my images is by date) and started to notice a pattern that I was, until this morning, competently unaware of.

September-12-2014

Then as I went a little further into my archives I found this image taken on September 12, 2014.  I have to have a serious talk with myself and broaden my field of interest.  🙂

Now here is the sad part.  I could show you a bunch more windmills and clouds around September, October, and November but I think you get a clear picture of what’s going on.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today.  Please give a moment of silence and thought to all the lives lost as a result of 9/11.  I hope you have a wonderful day.  I am playing golf with a dear friend today so my day is questionable.  I’ll certainly enjoy the companionship but the golf, well that is yet to be determined.  🙂

Be careful.

Happy Thursday!

I didn’t have any lunch engagements yesterday so I did one of my favorite things to do, grab a salad and a camera and go find something to photograph.

Out of habit I always go by the Duck Pond first.  I found a pair of Trumpeter Swans on the North side of the pond but they weren’t cooperating so I took a couple of images of them and then was going to move on as is my tendency.

September-09-2015-A

For some reason this day, however, I decided to just stay.  I spent 40 minutes at the pond just looking and listening.  I enjoyed the peacefulness and was fascinated with the micro activity around the pond.  After a while I really started paying attention to the butterflies working the flowers.

I didn’t have my micro lens with me but any port in a storm so I used what I had, the 80 – 400 mm lens.  It worked pretty good.

September-09-2015-C

After work I spent an hour and a half driving around Maquoketa making some images.  The City of Maquoketa is in the process of building a new website and they wanted some images showcasing the community.  I agreed to help them with some images so I spent some time photographing some of the places of interest around town for that project.

September-09-2015

So it was kind of late when I got home.  Jeanne and I went out for dinner and I didn’t make good choices in what I had.  Can’t get by with that when you have Diabetes.  😦

That’s it for today.  I hope you enjoy the day.  Thanks for stopping by the blog and be careful.  The 14th anniversary of 9-11 is tomorrow.  Be aware.

Happy Tuesday!

Back at it today.  It looked like rain most of the day yesterday and it was humid so that was a perfect excuse for me to stay inside and finish up some projects that I have put off for sometime.

I told you that Angie and Ben came over Sunday evening to have dinner and Mark was here as well.  Great to have everyone here at the same time.  It also gave me the opportunity to photograph my favorite little model.

September-06-2015

Austin hasn’t had much blog time so I wanted to capture a few images of him while they were here.  He is a happy little guy who is able to entertain himself and will smile if you give him a reason.  He smiles all the time at Ben and Angie but I had to work for mine.

We are coming into my favorite time of the year.  Cooler temperatures, autumn colors, harvest time and softer light earlier in the day.

September-06-2015-B

One last picture of Gabby.  She was playing with the bubble mix on the patio but wasn’t blowing any bubbles because there was a strong breeze. So she took the bubble liquid and spread it on the fire pit top and played with it that way.  🙂

She kept moving so it was hard to get a decent shot of her but you get the idea.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

Happy Monday and Happy Labor Day!

A mixed bag for  you today with no rhyme or reason to my selections.  Just to finish up my Saturday shoot at the Farmers’ Market.

I often times shoot a lot of random images that happen to catch my eye.  90% of them end up in the trash.  Often times Jeanne will say to me what are you taking a picture of now and there are times I honestly can’t tell her other than something caught my eye and may appeal to me when I get into post processing.

September-05-2015-2B

We had the kids over last night for the Labor Day grill out.  Enjoyed their company and playing with the Grand Kids.  Love to see them come over and when they leave it is wow did we do a lot I’m tired.  🙂

It takes a lot of energy to keep up with the little ones.  Gabby wanted Grandpa to come home with them last night.  Melted my heart but when I asked her if she wanted to sleep over at our house she said an emphatic no.

September-05-2015-2C

I’ll leave you with these colorful flowers to celebrate the end of Summer.  I personally am looking forward to the cooler drier air of the Fall season.  Yes I know what comes after that but it’s all part of the journey.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today.  Enjoy your holiday and be careful.

Happy Sunday!

Yesterday Jeanne suggested that we take the four large bags of “stuff” from my office clean up to the landfill as they were over the weight limit that the curb service would take.  Actually I think her motive was that she wanted to get permanently rid of the stuff so I wouldn’t go retrieve some of it.  🙂

So after the landfill run, we decided to check out the Farmers’ Market.  Jeanne wanted to get some fresh tomatoes and some sweetcorn.  I’m always up for the Farmers’ Market as it usually affords some great photo opportunities.

September-05-2015-B

Later in the day took a long hot power walk around my normal route.  That was pretty much my day.  I’m working on a project for a friend of mine and that took up the rest of the day.

September-05-2015-A

I wasn’t the only one who thought there was some photo opportunities at the Farmers’ Market.  Funny thing is that after he took his “candid” shot of a guy playing the accordion and a guy playing French harp he looked up to see me taking this image of him.  He gave me a look of disgust and turned and walked away.  Ironic!

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoy your day.  More hot and humid weather in our part of the world.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Be careful.

September-03-2015

Happy Saturday!

I actually intended to post this blog yesterday (Friday) but when I sat down to write it I discovered that my internet connection was down.  What to do without the internet?

I have avoided for a long time (too long to mention) cleaning my home office.  I’m not a hoarder but perhaps a distant cousin of one.  The first thing you should know is that my office is very small.  It is only a 9 x 11 foot room so how big of a job could it be?

Well I’ll tell you.  I started at 7:15 a.m. and finally finished at 3:42 p.m. only stopping 20 minutes for lunch.  I took out 4 huge (lawn sized) garbage bags of “stuff” plus a lot of clothes that are so far out of style I couldn’t even wear them to a retro party, not that I get invited to many parties.  Yes I have to share my office with a closet as well.

Anyway by the time I put things back in some semblance of order and blocked out the invading thoughts that I’m going to need almost everything I threw away, I looked at my office and honestly could not tell I had done one thing.  I was concerned that Jeanne would think I hadn’t done anything to my office but she had early dismissal yesterday because of the heat so she saw the state of my chaos.

Enough about cleaning, now about the images.  I had a wonderful day Thursday with many positive and uplifting experiences.  I left work about 6:30 p.m. and as I turned onto 61 highway I noticed 3 distinct mushroom looking clouds separated by a fair amount of distance between them.  They were enormously high and ominous looking.

I wanted to get somewhere that had a reasonably interesting foreground so I could capture the uniqueness of those clouds.  In the short amount of time I spent looking for the proper setting the clouds grew and began to merge into what I suspect was a good-sized storm somewhere in the Eastern part of the country.

September-03-2015-A

There is a saying in photography that when you have captured the image you’re interested in turn around and you may find something as or more interesting to shoot behind you.  Such was the case as I was walking back to my car.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Another hot and humid day in our part of the country.  Hope you have a great day.  Thanks for stopping by the blog and be careful.

September-02-2015

Happy Thursday!

One of my favorite things to do is taking place today.  We have Culture training at Camp Courageous.  We do this twice a year and use Camp Courageous as a retreat.  Charlie Becker and his wonderful staff are just super to work with and they go out of their way to help us have a successful meeting.

I always enjoy doing training and particularly this type of training.  I get to work with some very talented folks and it is just a real treat.

September-02-2015-A

On the way home last night I went by the Duck Pond as I always do and to my great surprise there were five Blue Herons in the Duck Pond stalking food.  I drove past the pond, pulled off the side of the road to get my camera set up for the shoot and then did another drive by.

To my delight none of them took off so I was able to get a few good shots.  The problem is the sun is always shinning directly against me on the way home so I really have trouble exposing for the mid-tones and shadows.

Additionally I do not normally carry my 600 mm lens so all I had was the 80 – 400 mm lens, which is a little short for the opportunity I had.

September-02-2015-B_

All things considered I was happy to watch the Herons stalk their prey for a few minutes.  The light was difficult and they were a little farther away then I would have preferred but you take what you can get and move on.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

August-31-2015-14A

Happy Monday!

I have three images for you today that have no correlation with each other and for some reason missed the first round of making the blog.

Lazy weekend with few accomplishments.  I guess those are needed from time to time.  Today I will wait for the garage door repairman to come.  The time frame they gave me was from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., so I will be waiting probably until 4:45 p.m. 🙂

August-31-2015-13A

I took a course over the weekend on retouching brides.  I have no intention of photographing a wedding but the same principles apply to portrait retouching as working with images of brides.  So I learned some great new techniques.  Now if I can just remember them all.

August-31-2015-13B

Once I’m done with the repairman I hope to get out and do some shooting today.  I’m thinking of going down to the MillWork District and photographing some of the neat old buildings they have refurbished.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

August-28-2015C

Happy Saturday!

Yesterday afternoon Jeanne and I visited the traveling 911 memorial / exhibit, which is at the Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque, Iowa.  It was raining at the time and traffic in Dubuque on Friday afternoon is a real pain but we wanted to visit it and pay our respect.  The main attraction for me was there were New York Fire Fighters (who experienced 911 first hand) at the display sharing their experience and knowledge of that day.

August-28-2015

The line was surprisingly short when we arrived and we only had to wait a few minutes to get out of the rain.  The entire time in the display you can hear the radio traffic between the firemen as they came upon the scene and their communication with each other as they entered the twin towers.

August-28-2015B

They do have some incredible artifacts from that day and amazing large-scale images on the wall.  I watched the events on television that day as most Americans did.  But the enormity of the destruction never really sunk in until I saw this 12 foot high image at ground level captured the day after the attack.  Mind boggling is the only thing that comes to mind.

One of the firemen told us what made the loss of life in the fire department so high was that the attack occurred right at shift change.  So not only did the on duty officers respond but the off duty ones did as well.

August-28-2015A

One of the lost firemen was just coming off his shift and was going to play golf with his three brothers.  He suited up with 75 pounds of gear and headed for the Twin Towers.  he perished in the collapse.

There were quotes throughout the display of survivors of that day and their emotions raw with anger, fear, shock, and sadness was evident.

I made a point to thank each of the four firemen for their service and pay the respect they so much deserve.  We also made a contribution to the fund that helps sustain the surviving families of the fallen heroes.

It was a moving display and well worth the effort to go.  It will only be in town two more days so if you live around Dubuque or it comes to your community I encourage you to go see it.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.
