December-24-2014-A

Happy Christmas Eve to you and your family.  Christmas Eve has always been so special to me.  As a child growing up we always had some of Mom’s homemade soup and sandwiches, then off to church where I usually dressed up as the ubiquitous Shepard for the manger scene.

We would then stop by and see Grandma and Grandpa who only lived a block away.  Then it was home to look for the sleigh tracks in the yard (which my Dad made) and then opening our presents.  I always took my presents to bed as they were meager but so precious to me.

Christmas traditions are so important and to this day they bring warm memories flooding back.

One tradition I used to do with my kids which, brought me great joy, was to take them to Toy R Us (when we had one) and let them roam the store to pick out anything they wanted.  We did this on Christmas Eve afternoon and Angie told me a few weeks ago that she really loved those times.  It was so much fun watching them make their decision.  It always took Angie longer than Mark as she weighed out the differences.  Mark always seemed to know right away what he wanted.

December-24-2014

We will celebrate with our kids tonight.  Angie and her family and Mark.  We will have a light supper, then church and then well who knows with bedtime schedules.  But it will be time spent with the people I love so much.

Today at work I will celebrate another tradition.  I always have lunch with my friend Steve and we toast a glass of wine to wish each other a Merry Christmas.  Then it’s to the mall to do my Christmas shopping.  🙂

I hope you enjoy your day and are able to spend it with people you love and admire.  Thank you for listening to my babble all year and for viewing my images.  My promise to you is to do better in 2015.

Have a Merry Christmas and as always please be careful.

Happy Tuesday!

I have Mallard Ducks for you today.  Why?  Because Mallard Ducks is what I have for you today.  🙂

I did a video for the local access channel yesterday in Maquoketa.  The lady who runs the operation is a professional and a very nice person.  She made us feel so comfortable it was almost like not having a camera recording your every word.  I think it went well and it was actually enjoyable.

December-21-2014-1B

Had a nice lunch with some of my friends yesterday.  One of them had received a gift card to the restaurant and in the true spirit of the season he invited us to be his guests for lunch.  It was rewarding.

December-21-2014-1C

Then before leaving for home I was invited to another friend’s home for a Christmas cheer.  We spent an hour visiting and enjoying some banter with another friend.

I love this time of year.  The spirit of giving and fellowship with your peers and friends. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of everyday living that part seems to get lost.

That’s all for today.  Hope you enjoy your Tuesday.  Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I enjoy the events of the day.

Thanks for stopping by the blog and be careful.

December-21-2014-A

Happy Monday!

I didn’t do much photography wise this weekend.  It was damp and gray the entire weekend and that didn’t inspire me to go look for images.  Instead I opted to finish up a couple of projects that I’ve put off for too long.

Sunday after church Jeanne and I went for a short drive down to the river.  No eagles flying nor any other birds for that matter.  Just some dedicated fishermen braving the icy cold temperature and misty conditions in hopes of catching their ever elusive prey.

December-21-2014

When you love to fish, weather is not a detractor, it’s just something you dress differently for and change your tactics to accommodate.  I do not believe you would have been able to convenience me to go on this thin ice.  There was as much water as there was ice from where we sat.

They made it to their spot without incident and cut a hole to begin their quest.

I wish I had more for you but that’s it for today.  I’ve got to start thinking about my Christmas shopping.  Only two more days before Christmas eve.  But then again I don’t want to get into too big of hurry!  🙂

Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

De Soto Hotel

Happy Friday!

One of the many things I love about digital photography is all the creative freedom it affords.  I shot this image of the De Soto hotel in Galena last week and was playing around with a new filter for Photoshop that rendered the above result.  Some may like it while others not so much.

De Soto Hotel

The black and white rendition.  I was going to try my retro look with the black and white but then decided it wouldn’t look right with the modern vehicles in the image and I didn’t have the time required to remove them.  Which is another thing I love about digital photography.  🙂

De Soto Hotel

Finally the image as it more or less looked out of the camera.  I did sharpen the image to bring out more detail.  Since I shot this with the Nikon D810 with its 36.5 megapixel sensor there is a lot of detail that can be brought out.

That’s it for today.  Nothing profound just trying new things.

Enjoy your Friday.  Thanks for checking out the blog and be careful.

Happy Thursday!

One day closer to the weekend.  The last of my Galena images from Saturday past.  As I said in an earlier post, I just didn’t find all that much to shoot.  It was the lowest amount of images I’ve taken since going to Galena.  Perhaps I was uninspired.

December-13-2014-3B

I had to go to the dentist yesterday afternoon (as a work in) to have a chipped tooth repaired.  My Dad was 81 when he passed and didn’t have one cavity.  I only have two and have been told by several dentists over the years what amazing teeth I have, but of late things seem to be going in the wrong direction.  Chipped teeth (2), cavities (2), crown (1).  Apparently all the genetic information didn’t get completely passed.  😦

December-13-2014-3C

I met a very interesting person yesterday in a meeting by the name of Mary Swander.  She is a professor of English at Iowa State University.  She has authored several books, short stories, screen plays, poetry, and is Iowa’s Poet Laureate.  Amazing lady who has written a play entitled “Map of My Kingdom”, a play about transitioning the family farm, business, wealth, etc., and the challenges to family harmony.   It is a one person, one hour production and tackles the difficulties families go through with the planning of transition.

I am neither cultured nor have any resources to transfer so I’m not sure why I was at the meeting but I must tell you it was one of the most fascinating and enjoyable hours I have spent in recent memory.  I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Mary speak of her life, her work, and her play.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Enjoy your day and be careful.

December-13-2014-2A

Happy Wednesday!

There were some images taken at Galena this past weekend with the intent of presenting them in black and white.  Some scenes, when you see them, just speak to you, I need to be void of color.  That is what I have for you today.  Only three images but from my viewpoint there was no other way to show them other then black and white.

December-13-2014-2C

I know that is a subjective evaluation and may be reflective of the mood at the time of the capture.  Yesterday, for example was a black and white day for me.  Not from a photography standpoint, just in general.  I was completely done with the day at 5:00 p.m. and wanted nothing more than some mindless activity to get lost in.

Fortunately for me (again subjective) I am and have been all my life an avid gamer.  Since Jeanne had a school function to attend (spouses not invited) I decided to battle the demons of Tristan and do my best to conquer the evil that resides there.  🙂

December-13-2014-2B

Although pure fantasy, there was some personal satisfaction in vanquishing one of the prime evils.

Today it is back to reality and without my magic sword and holy armor.  Hopefully the demons are calm and I can see in color again.  🙂

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoy your mid-week hump day.  Thanks for stopping by the blog.  Be careful.

Steve & Becki

Happy Monday!

Saturday we did our annual pilgrimage to Galena to do some shopping and photography with our great friends Steve and Becki.  The weather was crappy with mist and fog.

Normally I will take between 100 – 200 images when we’re in Galena but Saturday I only shot about 20 images.  The lighting was just so bad and I just didn’t see much that sparked my interest.

Book Bags

Our favorite restaurant Benjamins is closed.  We read about it on Saturday morning in the paper.  It has been open for 30 years and now is closed.  Atomic Toy Company (also one of our favorite stores to visit) is closing in January.

So we had a nice lunch at the De Soto House.  I must have eaten something that didn’t agree with me though, because I had an up set stomach a couple of hours later.

December-13-2014

Because of the foggy weather, the hour-long drive, and my uneasy stomach we decided to not travel to our second company Christmas party Saturday night.  Hate to miss a gathering but probably the smart thing to do.

Looks like more of the same kind of weather for the first part of the week anyway.  Better than sub-zero temperatures and snow so I’m not complaining.

Hope you have a wonderful day.  Thanks for stopping by the blog and be careful.

Eagle Flying

Happy Thursday!

I have one more eagle image to show you from last week.  It was just one of those times when I was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time.

I have noticed over the last few days a lot of eagles hunting over harvested corn fields.  Smaller rodents are less protected from their view and that makes for better hunting.

I had my one month check up with the eye surgeon yesterday afternoon.  He said I had Negative Dysphotopsia, which causes pseudo edge detection and flickering.  He said it would gradually get better and go away.  I was relived to hear that everything is looking good with the lens and my retina so I can stop worrying about that.  Just knowing that there is nothing wrong will help with the flickering problem.

If you’re bored Google Negative Dysphotopsia.  I did some reading and found that 49% of patients with cataract surgery suffer from it.  What I also read was that there is no clear understanding of what causes it.  In most cases it does improve as your brain adapts to the condition.

We’re going to do our annual trip to Galena with our dear friends this Saturday.  I always look forward to photographing the streets and shops of Galena and the wonderful lunch we always have at Benjamins.

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoy your day.  Thanks for stopping by the blog and be careful.

My Dad and Tippyt

Happy Birthday Dad!

He was born Melvin Charles Updegraff December 10, 1910, in Bethany, Missouri.  He passed away January 19, 1992 in Bethany, Missouri.  He hated the name Melvin Charles so he had it legally changed to Bud.  He was and still is one of the greatest men I have ever known.  One of my many regrets in life is that I never really told him how much I admired and loved him.

He was born with a defect ind his left leg, which gave him a noticeable limp as a young man.  He could never keep up with the other kids in sports so he spent a lot of his time hunting and fishing.  A botched operation left him even more crippled but he never complained.  I don’t ever remember him not limping.

Like many men of his era he wanted desperately to join the Army to fight in World War II.  Because of his leg they wouldn’t take him, even though he argued with the Army that he was fully capable of driving a truck or a tank.   He was devastated.  As you can see in the image above he was finally reduced to using crutches to get around and in his final years he was confined to a wheel chair.

It never stopped him though.  He was a mechanic (self-taught) and had an auto repair shop in our home town of Ridgeway, which he operated with his Father.  He went broke because he didn’t charge a fair price and gave away a lot of his work to his farmer friends who couldn’t pay him.  Many times I remember my Mother saying, Bud you at least have to cover the costs of the parts.    I don’t think he ever had two quarters to rub together at one time.

Later he went to work for a large Quarry operation as a mechanic and finally driving a gravel truck.  Before the Americans With Disability law he built a hand clutch for the truck he drove so that he could keep his job.  Built it on his own time and with his own money.  He was up at 4:00 a.m. every day, worked until 6:00 p.m. and worked 6 days a week, never once complained.  I asked him about it once and he simply said, “Davy, I’m so thankful I can work.”

When the state passed a law that all gravel trucks had to have their load covered with a tarp he designed a spring-loaded covering that he could crank open and closed from his cab.  The materials and the work were on him.

When he finally retired, he drove a truck for the sheltered workshop delivering and picking up products and also chauffeuring the “kids” to and from work.  Finally he would mow the neighbor’s yards with his old lawn tractor that barely ran but it gave him a little spending money.

Shortly after I was born he was the manager of a lumber yard in Minneapolis, Kansas.  He had a promising career for a young man with an 8th grade education.  He could figure the materials for building an entire house and there wasn’t more than a wheel barrow worth of left over materials.  He was ripping some lumber with a radial arm saw and cut all of his fingers off of his right hand.  There was no workers’ compensation in those days so his company fired him because they said he wouldn’t be able to do his job and they didn’t even pay his medical bills.

When people met my Dad for the first time they were sometimes taken aback when he would thrust his fingerless hand to shake theirs.  The loss of fingers didn’t slow him down a bit.  I can still remember him grasping a small nut or screw between his thumb and the tiny stub that used to be his little finger.  He never complained about the loss of his fingers or his handicap leg even though I know there were times his leg hurt so much he could hardly stand it.

The little dog on his lap is Tippy.  He loved that dog so much.  He had always had dogs but Tippy was his favorite.  When Tippy died some of my Dad died with him.  He was never the same.

I found a picture the other night of Dad that I had never seen.  It is the only time I have ever seen him with fingers on his right had.

He was a tough disciplinarian and was strong as a rock but he was also a gentleman who wouldn’t know how to do something wrong if he tried.

I think about you a lot Dad and so many times I wish had told you just how proud I was and am of you and how much I love you.

Be Careful.

Happy Monday!

Jeanne and I attended one of our bank’s Christmas party Saturday night.  One down and three to go.

It was a good time with friends and we enjoyed ourselves.  I always hesitate to take a camera with me to events like this.  I know that people usually do not want their picture taken, however some of the best memories are of these events with all the human interaction.  What better way to preserve the memory than with an image.

This young couple sat across the table from us and so I naturally took a bunch of close-ups of them.  They were good sports and didn’t complain.

I was pretty much a veg on Sunday.  Slept late and then took a whopping 3 hour nap in the afternoon.  A complete waste of a good day but I’m not feeling guilty today.  🙂

Hope you enjoy your Monday.  Thanks for stopping by and be careful.
